Wii, Xbox 360 Receive System Updates

8
In an odd though entirely meaningless coincidence, Microsoft and Nintendo both issued system updates for those with internet-connected Xbox 360s and Wiis.

Bringing the Wii's system firmware up to 3.0, the latest update streamlines the Wii Shop Channel interface, allowing users to more easily navigate the store and search through its many offerings. A digital clock has been added to the main Wii menu, along with scrolling headlines in the News Channel box and an indicator of current weather conditions in the Forecast Channel box. Previously, one needed to enter the respective channel for said information.

The Xbox 360 update, meanwhile, is far less substantial. According to Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hyrb--better known as Major Nelson--it only adds support for the wireless guitars that will be released alongside Neversoft's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Harmonix's Rock Band later this fall. A more feature-packed update is still expected to hit this year.

haha, yea, that update spooked me. Woke up at about 3 or 4 this morning wondering why the hell my entire room was bright blue!

Finally saw it was the Wii and said FUCK YOU NINTENDO... I"M GOING BACK TO SLEEP...

I have 4 rooms available... but only one 36" TV, and that fucker weighs close to 200 pounds... sure I could move the Wii somewhere else, but why?

Besides these updates are very seldom, so it's not a big deal... now if the entire shack started sending me messages every night (right? not just system updates, but any message received triggers the light?) then we would have a problem and the light would be silenced once and for all.

I turned the Wii's standby connection off. It makes the console fairly warm when in standby mode and that seemed like a waste of electricity given that nobody sends messages to me via the Wii (because the whole system sucks from how painful it is to add friends to how long it takes to deliver messages) and I almost never turn the thing on to take advantage of the news/weather which I can check via my PC anyway.

Dunno if it's fixed now but turning off the standby connection seemed to break the weather channel's ability to download weather updates on demand. Turn it back on and it works again. A bug, I guess? The weather thing is kinda neat to show people who visit but not something I use often enough to want the standby connection turned on. (The news channel seems to download headlines on demand without a standby connection; only seems to be a problem with the weather one for me.)
