Epic Acquires Reality Engine

Epic Games today announced it has snapped up the Reality Engine, and is bringing Artifical Studios founder / lead engine programmer Tim Johnson in-house. Epic will not continue sales or support of the Reality Engine, but certain aspects of the engine might find their way into the Unreal Engine. Developers who have licensed the Reality Engine will receive a discount on an Unreal Engine 3 license if they choose to upgrade.

    Great news for Unreal Engine games. The RE had some really cool effects that if incorporated with Unreal, could make one really sick and dominate engine.

      Sounds to me they just didn't want devs to have an option of licensing the Reality Engine instead of the Unreal 3 engine.

        uh ? how about no... Epic will not continue sales or support of the Reality Engine ... pretty solid if you ask me, my guess is that they wanted some qualified personel together with some neat tech perhaps, and beacuse its not so widespread it was also fairly cheap ?

          Well, cessation of sales and support does pretty effectively remove anyone's ability to choose the Reality Engine. I bet it's really because they need quality core engine programmers. They're pretty hard to find, just like GOOD UI designers, which is why Google's acquiring a bunch of startups and hiring certain open-source programmers.

        Sounds to me like they wanted to hire the guy and the engine disappearing was an unfortunate side effect of that.
