Seriously, tripods let you take pictures of still things in low light without needing a flash. Stable surfaces you can lean against, prop your camera on, or place your camera on are a good alternative, but your positioning is limited. Even a cheap gooseneck-leg tripod will help; I have one for my AE-1, but I haven't used it much because it's short and collapses under the camera's weight most of the time. -
