This Sunday morning unexpectedly brings us the long awaited DOOM 3 demo. The 461mb download includes the three level Mars City mission from id Software's horror first person shooter which was released last month.

      Am i the only one who liked having to use the flashlight seperatly? I thought the system created a greater sense of tension and added to the atmosphere

            I find it fun, and there are mods for those who don't.

            You had a choice between seeing well and being able to do long range damage. It made for some good gameplay and panic sections, plus increased the level of fear when wandering around in the dark with no idea what's around the corner.

          Anyone who complains about using a flashlight totally missed the point of the game if you ask me. That goes for you guys that played at 12 noon and complained about it being to dark, and for anyone who played on easy level and wondered why they got bored.

        A lot of folks think id didn't think about it...it was a design decsion. The game wasn't supposed to be fun (like Mario) it was supposed to be scary, and making you choose between arminf yourself and knowing what was out there adds tension. I thought it was great, and peeople that used duct tape and then complained that the game sucked...well, what can I say? Maybe they should play the game, rather than a hack.

        I agree! I thought that was the whole point of the game, was to scare you.. not let you have a flashlight so you could see everything?! I mean, why not just go back to Far Cry... everything is so bright & cheery in that game :)

        I was perfectly happy with the implementation of the flashlight. The whole point was to have to say "What the hell was that?" not "Hey Imp, what are you doing trying to hide behind that pipe...see my flashlight?

        Might as well have flipped on the backup gens and turned all the lights back on.

        I really wanted a flashlight + gun mod, but I played through the game before the first mod came out... and by that time I got used to it.

      Its a shame that you can't really see all the great artwork because most of it is undershadow and in darkness.

        Agreed on the flashlight. It was meant to be atmospheric without the whole (taped) flashlife + gun. Thats why ID gave you the option to change quickly between weapon and flashlight using the F key.

        I was disapointed that you couldn't at least use your pistol and flashlight together. Then again, that did make for some very tense situations. Especially when you had to crawl through vents and the like.

          wha....? I NEVER had anything jump out at me when I was crawling in a vent. Halfway through the game I realized they were safe havens.

          btw/ switching between flash/weapon wasnt a bother for me, neither was the gamma

            The tension isn't from having monsters jump out at you, it's from not knowing whether they will.

            The best parts in this game is when there AREN'T any monsters around and you just walk around paranoid like a motherfucker expecting something to jump out at you from every dark corner. Having to use the flashlight when you really want to have the shotgun up makes it so much more tense.

              heh, well yeah on that. And admittably my palms got pretty sweaty going through those crawlspaces the first couple times. But there came a time where I said "well, if nothings popped out by now, NOTHING will..." and it didnt :D
