In this guide, we’ll go over how to find the flamethrower, which you can earn by farming certain creatures out in the Borderlands 3 world.

How to get the Elon Musk flamethrower in Borderlands 3

If you’re wanting to farm for Legendary weapons like the Firesale Long Musket ++, then you’re going to want to have made your way to the end of Borderlands 3. After beating the game you unlock Mayhem Mode, which basically ups your chances of getting great loot while making the enemies that you encounter much stronger. This provides a nice challenge for the Borderlands 3 endgame, which is what many players will want to spend the majority of their time earning new weapons.

Where to farm for the Elon Musk flamethrower

To get started on your grind for the Elon Musk flamethrower in Borderlands 3, make your way to Sanctuary and activate Mayhem Mode III. This is the most difficult version of Mayhem Mode, so make sure you’re well equipped for the job. You can farm in regular mode and even on lower Mayhem Modes, but the loot drop rate is much higher when running Mayhem III.

With Mayhem III set, head to Athenas. The place that you’re going to want to head to is in located quite a ways through the main Athenas area and there isn’t any kind of fast travel points near it. This makes farming this particular place a bit of a pain, as you’ll need to run through enemies several times to do it. However, the drop rates here have been reported to be so great, that it’s one of the best places to go for weapons like the Firesole Long Musket ++. Make use of the map above to find exactly where you need to go.

Head to Athenas and make your way to the spot we've marked on the map to farm for the Elon Musk flamethrower.

Once you arrive, look out for a yellow-painted rock that you can climb up on the left-hand side of the area where the Maliwan troops are fighting a bunch of Ratches. Once you climb up the painted rock, you should immediately spot the Chupacabratch, one of the Legendary Hunt creatures that you can take down for Hammerlock. Focus your attention on burning this beasty pretty quickly and it will drop some loot for you. On Mayhem III it will drop a ton of additional loot on top of what it normally drops, thus increasing your chances of grabbing the Firesale Long Musket ++.

In case you aren’t a fan of the Tesla-owning tech celebrity, the Legendary weapon here makes a callback to Musk’s The Boring Company, which sold and shipped 20,000 “Not-a-Flamethrowers” back in 2018. Around that same time, Musk tweeted out “But wait, there’s more: the flamethrower is sentient, its safe word is “cryptocurrency” and it comes with a free blockchain.” In response, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford tweeted, “Elon, I’m going to add this to our next Borderland game. Super serious. Let me know if you want to write the flavor text. You may have already done so - we'll just lift it from one of your tweets.”
