Lara Croft PC Using Steam for DRM

Crystal Dynamics' downloadable isometric action game Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will utilize digital distribution platform Steam for digital rights management on PC--meaning that the game will require the Steam client to be installed in the US.

"We've gone down the road of implementing Steam DRM where we've committed to the US being an exclusive and we're going to make a decision as to whether or not we'll use different distribution channels," brand manager Karl Stewart told CVG. Read more »

Valve's Steamworks Seeps Into Unreal Engine 3

Epic Games and Valve Software announced they have inked a deal that will see the Valve's free Steamworks tools more easily available to all Unreal Engine 3 licensees.

The free Steamworks suite offers solutions for everything from auto-updating and social networking to matchmaking and copy protection in PC games. Unreal technology has been licensed widely by titles as diverse as Batman: Arkham Asylum and BioShock. Read more »

Steam Coming to Mac in April, Portal 2 This Fall

After some heavy-handed hints, Valve today confirmed that it will be bringing its previously Windows-only digital distribution platform Steam to the Mac in April 2010.

Said the company: "Steam and Valve's library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April." Read more »

Supreme Commander 2 Demo Arrives on Steam, Steamworks DRM Confirmed

Supreme Commander 2, Chris Taylor's RTS follow-up to 2007's Supreme Commander, will be using Valve's Steamworks program for its DRM. All copies of Supreme Commander 2, digitally obtained or purchased in out-dated box form, will require an installation of Steam for validation.

Additionally, a demo of the title is now available for download through Steam ahead of the game's March 2, 2010 release date. Give it a try and if you like it go ahead and pre-order it on Steam. You'll save yourself $5. The Xbox 360 version is set to release on March 18, 2010.

Metro 2033 Uses Steamworks on PC

Valve Software's Steamworks suite will power all PC copies of 4A's post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2033, Valve and publisher THQ announced today.

Steamworks will give provide "auto-updating, Steam Achievements, Steam support for in-game DLC, and more" while requiring Metro 2033 be played through Steam.

Based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 is a moody shooter with RPG elements set in the subways and surface of a frozen post-apocalyptic Moscow. Read more »

Aliens vs. Predator PC and Napoleon: Total War Incorporate Steamworks, Require Steam

All digital and retail copies of Napoleon: Total War and Aliens vs. Predator PC will pack Steamworks integration, publisher SEGA and digital retailer Valve announced today, meaning that both will require players to have installed Valve's Steam platform.

Both games will utilize the Steamworks platform for achievements, matchmaking, leaderboards, stats, and server-side Cloud data storage, explained Valve. Aliens vs. Predator launches February 16, with Napoleon: Total War coming February 23. Read more »

Lead and Gold Gets Publisher, New Screenshots

Publisher Paradox has signed on to make its console publishing debut with developer Fatshark's Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West, the two announced today.

Coming to PC and as-yet-unspecified consoles in Q1 2010, the team-based third-person shooter packs "four distinct player characters with a multitude of strengths and weaknesses" and "a diverse level-up system" across "a multitude of different game modes," with the PC edition featuring Steamworks integration. Modern Warfare 2 Adopts Steamworks on PC

Activision and Valve today announced that they've hammered out an agreement to get Valve's Steamworks suite of tools onto the PC version of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2.

"All PC versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be powered by Steamworks, providing gamers with auto-updating, anti-cheat technology, Steam Achievements, and the recently introduced Steam Cloud," reads the release. Read more »

'Steamworks Makes DRM Obsolete,' Claims Valve

In a press release celebrating its free development and publishing toolset, Half-Life creator and Steam operator Valve declared that "Steamworks makes DRM obsolete."

The studio trumpeted recent additions to the toolset, including "Custom Executable Generation (CEG) technology" and support for in-game downloadable content.

"[CEG] compliments the already existing anti-piracy solution offered in Steamworks," explained Valve. "A customer friendly approach to anti-piracy, CEG makes unique copies of games for each user allowing them to access the application on multiple machines without install limits and without having to install root kits." Red Orchestra Getting Steam Achievements, New Map

Tripwire's tactical FPS Red Orchestra will soon see the addition of Steam achievements and a new free map, according to the developer.

The map, "Fallen Heroes," is set in the Russian Red Square. Planned for inclusion in the initial release, Fallen Heroes was cut and forgotten for years. Tripwire recently passed the map to community mapper Kevin "Dr. Guppy" Butt, who completed it for the free release. Read more »

Empire: Total War Special Forces Edition Announced, Game Features Steamworks Integration

Sega has announced that like so many games these days, Creative Assembly's Empire: Total War (PC) will receive a special edition in addition to its regular release.

Titled the Special Forces Edition, the premium package will come with exclusive "elite" units as well as a detailed print of the Campaign Map. No pricing or additional details were announced.
