Graphics are '60% of the game,' Crytek CEO says

The graphics vs. gameplay debate has raged for some time. Unsurprisingly, the CEO of Crysis 3 developer Crytek thinks graphics top gameplay every time.

"People say that graphics don't matter, but play Crysis and tell me they don't matter. It's always been about graphics driving gameplay," CEO Cevat Yerli said.

So, what's new in CryEngine 3?

So, what's new in CryEngine 3?

As with all engines, CryEngine gets updated all the time. We met up with Crytek at GDC to see what shiny new bells and whistles they've added to their engine.

The first new feature is unique to Crytek. Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping (PADM) is the studio's alternative to tessellation. It allows artists to add a displacement texture dynamically on objects "with no visible polygon edges on the silhouette of the displacement." In a real-time demo, we saw a tree trunk's displacement dynamically altered--a neat trick for artists, to be sure.

Enemy Front preview

Enemy Front preview

World War II is still one of the most ubiquitous settings for first-person shooters. Largely based on runs from Normandy to Berlin, they typically try to harness the tone of films like Saving Private Ryan or the miniseries, Band of Brothers, highlighting the real-world conflicts and sacrifices of what journalist Tom Brokaw dubbed "The Greatest Generation." Enemy Front, the new game being developed by Stuart Black at City Interactive, is going for a decidedly different approach that provides an over-the-top feel more akin to the classic action hero style of war movies.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 preview

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 preview

Back at E3 last year, I attended what was described as a tech demo for Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. It was an early look, not based on any final gameplay, that hinted at some of the improvements--both minor and major--that moving the series to CryEngine 3 would afford. This week, the game's producer, Michal Sroczynski, stopped by the Shacknews offices to show me an updated demo from the game's single-player campaign on the Xbox 360. Though I have yet to actually play it myself, what I saw of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 the other day impressed me quite a bit more than I expected it would.

US Army training game videos showcase CryEngine 3

US Army training game videos showcase CryEngine 3

Two trailers for the the US Army-exclusive title "Dismounted Training System" has appeared online, showcasing the game's use of Crytek's CryEngine 3.

The US Army's $57 million training "game" was announced back in May, and it said to feature huge areas as compared to the tightly crafted maps found in games like Modern Warfare 3. Unlike game's like Full Spectrum Warrior, the Army-sponsored game isn't slated to be available to the general public, which is a shame because it looks gorgeous.

MechWarrior Online to use CryEngine 3

Piranha Games' upcoming MechWarrior Online may be a free-to-play game, but it promises not to look cheap. The company has licensed the highly-regarded CryEngine 3 to power the online game, and is one of "over 20" F2P games currently in development using Crytek's engine.

"It is definitely the best choice for us," Piranha Games president Russ Bullock said in a press release. "Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly."

CryEngine 3 SDK offered for free

The battle of the engines continues. Crytek has announced that the SDK for its CryEngine 3 will be free--not unlike the competing Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games. The free toolset includes the CryEngine 3 Sandbox level editor, and promises to be updated regularly, "to make sure our community has access to all the advances we make to CryEngine 3."

Curiously, the press release says the free SDK will make "next generation games for PC," omitting the fact that the engine also works on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
