Overwatch's Torbjorn gets turret nerf in a few weeks

Torbjorn's turrets appear to be too much for some players, which is why Blizzard will be nerfing the ability in an upcoming update.

Overwatch’s master of the turret, Torbjorn, will soon have one of his most important weapons nerfed.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan announced Torbjorn’s upcoming nerf via a Reddit thread where players were complaining about his use ruining the player’s experience on consoles. “In an upcoming patch, we will reduce the damage done by Torbjorn's turret by 30% on Xbox One and PS4. PC will remain unchanged,” Kaplan said in the thread.

As for when console players can expect the nerf to kick in, Kaplan says players should expect changes to take place around mid- to late-July.

Torbjorn is a character who squarely focuses on defense, making him quite the adversary if you’re on the attacking team. He’s able to use a rivet gun as his primary attack, and a hammer for close-range bludgeonings. His most effective weapon is the use of a upgradable turrets, although it appears it’ll be less effective on consoles next month.

Weird. Why is it getting a nerf at all? Console folks have trouble aiming we know, but is it just a factor of not being able to shoot at the turret in the distance? So... Nerf the turret?

Having a turret with perfect aim and tracking against people using game pads to aim is imbalanced. If it takes you more than 2 seconds to kill the turret you're dead and on console it might take slightly longer to acquire the target.

Only thing I don't get is why it takes a month to implement a nerf like that...

MS & Sony patch certification. That takes time, plus Blizzard have to pay for it so they wait until there's a bundle of changes to put through at once.

I thought that wasn't the case anymore? I remember reading that with this gen companies could do small patches without having to pay per. Plenty of games have balance patches almost every week.

It's that way on PC too. Most times I died and never even saw the turret. And they can't shoot thru walls, but it'd pretty obvious they can see players thru them. Cuz they immediately fire the instant you come out of cover.

Yeah the other day I saw one track me through a wall on death cam. It shot at me while I ran into cover and followed me until I came out the other side and started firing the instant I appeared.

6 torb defense is almost impossible to beat on console apparently

Ahh yeah I guess I can see console folks getting trolled by that. Console specific nerf is quite tragic

Apparently it's so unbalanced that 6 Torb offense is just as successful as 6 Torb defense against other team comps.

Depending on the map its not unwinnable if you counter it with some long range Pharah's and then rush in while they are in disarray trying to put back down lvl 2 turrets. On a pub game though its almost impossible because on one wants to switch characters based on situation it seems.

You can kinda shoot around a corner and splash damage them down if you don't have any shield/healing, just like in TF2. You can even lead with a conc rocket to separate Torb from his turret.

Same with genji; 3 spams of his left click shuri will kill a t2 turret. The opposing team yesterday went 3 torb and I got to on fire in about 2 minutes just sniping the turrets.

6 zarya's should roll over the torbjorn team. I've been on the receiving end of that before.

I think they need to nerf the range of some of the shotgun characters such as Torbjorn and Reaper. They still do a little too much damage at medium range.

Do you want it to be like destiny where shotguns are useful only in melee range?

I wouldn't agree with this at all. Torbs gun is Both a shotgun and a longer range weapon, and reaper is all but useless vs a good midrange character like soldier 76, hanzo, even Mae.

I disagree - Reaper is already a weak draft compared to Tracer and Genji, who can deal decent chip damage at medium range even if they excel up close.

They really hardly do any damage at all at medium range, do you play them? Lag compensation might make you think enemy Reapers are further away than they actually are.

They need to fix the aiming on consoles. Not really sure what the deal is, but there's severe input lag and dead zones/sensitivity/acceleration feel wrong no matter the setting. If someone could legitimately aim as widow, mccree, or soldier, the turret would be fine.

        to shoot at:

        1) genji
        2) tracer
        3) reaper
        4) pharah
        5) genji again

Because it does fucking garbage damage and many classes can kill it with very, very little trouble? Torb is supposed to be a counter to specific classes via the fact that his turret aims so well (eg: Tracer). Taking that away from him would make him basically worthless. Try playing Torb one time against a team that actually plays well and you will find that it's nearly impossible to keep a turret up and very frustrating and difficult to be effective with.

P.S. I play on PC so this may not be quite as accurate with the console crowd where popping turrets is more difficult.
