Rage trailer talks guns and gadgets
"Rage, at its core, is a first-person shooter," creative director Tim Willits explains in a new video dev diary. "We're id. We make first person-games. When you pick up the shotgun and you shoot a bad guy, you know what to expect." Guns. Big bangs.
"Rage, at its core, is a first-person shooter. These other elements, like racing and vehicle combat, they're added to the experience, but it's important not to get confused by really what we do," creative director Tim Willits thrillingly explains in a new trailer. If you've been at all concerned, worry no more. "We're id. We make first person-games. When you pick up the shotgun and you shoot a bad guy, you know what to expect."
Indeed we do, and shooting bad guys is exactly what the delightful four-minute video dev diary covers. The fine folks at id talk about Rage's about weapons, ammo types, and crafted gadgets, introducing new armaments at regular intervals, and how to make shooting faces satisfying.
Plus, design director Matt Hooper explains that Rage's money isn't necessarily the RPG mechanic it may initially seem. "The economy is really your tool to manipulate how you want to play the game, it really is this player choice mechanic," he says. "You're picking up this cash and these other cool items, and you sell it, and you pick which ammo you want to buy."
Splendid. All splendid. Rage is headed to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 4, having recently been delayed by a few short weeks.

We know id can do shooters, they've done them over and over.
Sadly, you've gotta do something new now, rather than the same old shooting with new guns.
Usually id tries to capitalize on Carmack's genius of making new cutting edge graphics, but right now it's only looking to be compression, rather than new graphics.
Id is going to have to reinvent themselves some... their formula is getting old.
And maybe thats the difference between valve and id. Id is a one man powerhouse, then capitalizing on that. While valve is a massive team effort.-

Ok that is separate from the whole Doom 3 thing. But at that time the what would become Quake was more of an RPG type thing sort of envisioned by John Romero. As the project dragged id decided to come back to what they knew and pulled in a more familiar shooter/sci-fi wrapper to what they had built. I don't know where John Carmack was in terms of "allegiance" at the beginning of the project, but once it was more scattered I recall reading that he was very much in support of reigning in the scope and drilling down on a core experience that they were competent at delivering.

At least since late 2009. http://www.shacknews.com/article/60857/evening-reading?id=21141645#itemanchor_21141645

I think that the engineering/economy side is neat. When RAGE was first announced, I had always hoped it would be massively multiplayer. People could quest together, duel each other, set up fortresses and defend them (which would be a cool element to work on concert with an economy and engineering items), etc.
