paging all UK and Euro shackers - they should be able to help you :) [maybe east coasters too, but they're all probably busy getting shit-faced since the cool ones go out on week nights]

Open the big valve (between radiator and wall) all the way. That turns it on. The small little steam valve sort of controls the temp so you can play with that- just don't open it up so much it starts to spit

nothing else to do.. the thermostat controls whether the water boiler is heated or not. if the thermostat has reached target temperature, then it stops heating the water, which cools as it runs through the radiators

I have radiators, if all the valves are open and that's not working, there's not much else you can do. Sounds like a flow problem the landlord needs to take care of.

It does take a while for them to heat up, and even longer for them to make a difference in the house temperature...how long has the heat been on? Maybe the radiators closest to the water heater are hot and the others just need a little more time?

If they are water radiators then the small valve is for bleeding air out of the system. You should have the heat turned on and bleed the air out of all the radiators at the beginning of each cold season. You will notice a drastic difference in the heat they throw after they have been bled.
