Morning Discussion
The original cancellation of Minerva's Den on PC was a kick in the teeth. It was a decision made by the wicked number-crunching machine we all like to pretend isn't part of the video games industry, the scary monster we tell our children will gobble them up if they buy used video games. The kind of fiend that grows stronger on their fears and your denial until the dark belief congeals into a solid form that lurks just out of sight, gently slopping across your face at night, filling your mind with... sorry, I got a bit carried away.
I'd recommend you buy Minerva's Den on PC because it's a bite-sized glob of loveliness. How that jibes with your morals, I don't know--on one hand, 2K listened to complaints but on the other, they did toss us into the gaping maw of the Jittering Numbster (as it is called) in the first place and the beast would demand that makeup be slapped on its twisted face. Me, I'm cursed and damned as I bought a second copy of BioShock 2, on Xbox 360, as soon as 2K announced the cancellation just so I could play Minerva's Den. Egg on my face, shame in my heart and a void in my purse.

MERCFOX USERS: Fix your shit, or this might happen to you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkUL7HMm--U&hd=1
foo's set up a temporary server, which is running the latest backup. You can find it at set.shacknws.com. This server does not have the fire/lava nerfs.
Log in, find your stuff on the test server. If you find a fire, or lava flowing, do /getpos and reply to this thread with those coordinates, as well as a small description of the problem/area. Next, log in to the "real" world (shackeast.sytes.net ), and try to fix the problem.
I can not stress to you how important it is for everyone to do this. If people don't log in and fix their fires, the world as we know it will go up in flames.
Every few hours foo will restart the temporary server with the current real world backup, so we can test our fixes.-
-
Also note: Standing lava pools appear to be particularly dangerous, as the sparks that spit off the top of them can go through cobble, stone, glass, etc for up to 4 squares we believe. In the example of the pagoda above, there was a layer of lava 1 block under the floor: it didn't immediately catch fire every time we reset it (the sparks appear to be random) but it always caught fire eventually.

It did raise an interesting issue that the admins have been talking about behind the scenes though. We can now restore an area selectively from backup. Should we do this, for example, if the player builds a bunch of portals in their wood castle, and a Ghast spawns and burns their shit down?
My vote is with no, personally. -

Thanks guys. I'm working on it now. Some of that lava was planned but it did get out of control on the test server. The part that bothers me is that the lava wasn't put there by me.. somebody took it upon themselves to build under my tower.. assuming I would like it. Now I'm left with cleaning it up.

The TL;DR is that the server mod that we use to limit fire (and also to make buckets, etc work) is a hack. The writer basically decompiled the source code, changed a couple things, then saved the new .class files and released them. You then overwrite your default server files with the modified ones to 'install' this mod. This is compared to other server mods which act as a 'wrapper' around the existing code, without actually modifying the files.
As such, there's no guarantee our lava/fire nerf will work following the pending update. So we're assuming the worst, and preparing for the mod not to work, just in case.

You need the Llamacraft server mod to get water working properly at the moment: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1012&t=23483
However we don't know if this will work after the Boo update, so don't lean on it too heavily -

Goddamn, here's also some proof that he messed with GMod servers that were running Wiremod (which apparently he contributed to).

People aren't just gonna forgive you for what you did. Stop developing, stop posting, just sit down with your OWN life in real life and work your issues out before you take them out on other communities. Half the reason you're a furry is because that's the only group that will accept you, because they all have issues too.

yeah, I had a large chest /12 full. (moved all item into the bottom 1/2). I wanted to move it one space back. I was hoping to destroy the empty half of the large chest, move it, them move the items over, the move the other half of the chest. Apparently I chose poorly and removed the full half of the chest first.
I was able to pick up a lot of the items that popped out, but not all of them

Interesting read. It did make me think though.. Minecraft (and notch) could end up being a bigger thing than it is even now. The way this is catching on and the way it brings people together into little minecraft server communities... it could be the seeds of a whole new thing. Community based creative environments... it could spawn a whole new genre of games (even beyond just 'games'). As big as minecraft is.. imagine how huge something like this could be on Facebook or something! As simple as minecraft is to get into... an even more simplified creative environment in a facebook-based application could be massive. Hear my words... Mine-ville will rule the world!!!

Although considering that Notch never said 'damage in SMP will be in the Boo update', he's about 80% to ticking off all these features: http://minecraft.net/boo/

At this point, we've been without a major update for a long time now. It seems like for the past week and half or so he's really been cranking away at this and making a lot of progress. I think at this point whatever else he finishes beyond what he's already done... it's going to be a lot of fun to play with the new version. It's already going to be awesome no matter what else he adds. I mean.. biomes alone is such a cool addition even if they aren't 100% fine-tuned by the time the release comes.

Yeah, you are way more sophisticated at this than me. I check twitter on my phone while sitting the throne in the morning (before getting ready for work). Then I check while I walk from my car to my desk (long walk). Then I check throughout the day when I'm bored. A lot of the good stuff he says in his replies to other people.. which you miss if you just read the 'headlines'.

Example:
Regular tree setup
sapling on dirt w/ torch:

Mega trees:

http://pancake_humper.shackspace.com/minecraft/megatrees2.jpg
http://pancake_humper.shackspace.com/minecraft/megatrees3.jpg
It's 2 mega trees side by side. There are deposits of wood throughout both sections. It is a MASSIVE difference-
Interesting. I'm going to have to play with that.
Incidentally, mega trees are more annoying if your intention is to cut them down, since you have to get rid of all those pesky wood bits before the leaves despawn. I find simple trees much faster to harvest for a sustainable wood-farming operation -- cut down 4 wood and a couple random branches, plant sapling, move onto next tree.
Your method should prove nice for planting forests for aesthetic purposes though :D

Server Admins
My little friends and family server is growing, and although I rarely have more than 3-5 people on at a time I'm thinking about moving it off my gaming PC--mainly because my upstream bandwidth is only 1mbps and I seed a lot of TV shows (my wife and sister-in-law watch a lot of shit)...
Anyone using a VPS/server host:
Please list your host and pricing info if you don't mind...
Thanks!-

unfortunately you generally get what you pay for. the cheaper the host, the more likely they are to oversell their hardware. i'm not sure how stressful the minecraft server is. if it just uses a lot of RAM but very little CPU power, you might be able to get away with a cheaper host. CPU cycles are usually where you get shafted with cheaper hosts
