Rift dev announces voxely sandboxer Trove

Voxel-y sandbox worlds with digging and building and crafting are all the rage nowadays, and Trion Worlds has one of its own too. The Rift and Defiance developer last week announced its free-to-play Trove, which is a fair bit like all those other sandbox games, but with the novel idea of carrying your home base over from procedural world to procedural world.

Trove is to offer action-RPG-y online adventures, with dungeons to explore, bosses to beat, levels to gain, resources to harvest, items to craft, and loot to, er, loot.

End of Nations' MOBA switch because MMO aspects 'underdeveloped'

End of Nations has been tightly under wraps since publisher Trion Worlds took development of the MMO back in house from Petroglyph last December.

End of Nations executive producer Scot Lane told us that the MMO aspects of the original game were "underdeveloped and didn't resonate well" with fans. But "the combat felt like it was on a trajectory to be compelling and fun" which is why Trion decided to transform the game into a MOBA RTS.

We said before that Trion Worlds planned to turn its MMORPG Rift free-to-play on this day but, you know, what sort of company expects people to remember things like that in the excitement of E3? But it has, and everyone can now play it as much as they please without paying a penny.

Trion Worlds hit with more layoffs, Defiance team impacted

Trion Worlds has undergone yet another round of layoffs, a new report confirms. This follows layoffs in December, which largely affected the Rift team. According to sources speaking to IGN, "mostly Defiance support staff and dev staff" and "teams that provide generic responsibilities and services" have been let go.

It's unclear how many people were let go, but the report says that the bulk of the layoffs affect Trion's San Diego studio, where Defiance was developed.

Rift going free-to-play on June 12

Rift going free-to-play on June 12

By today's standards, an MMORPG running for over two years before going free-to-play has been pretty successful with the subscription model. So well done, Rift. Developer Trion Worlds today announced that it will switch the MMO to F2P on June 12, a respectable 25 months after launching. It'll do the usual microtransaction stuff, of course.

Defiance review: MMO meets sandbox

Defiance review: MMO meets sandbox

"So...what am I supposed to be doing?"

More than any other thought, this was the phrase that echoed through my mind during just about every moment of Defiance when I wasn't actively pursuing a quest. It's an MMO, but it doesn't include most of the tropes we've come to expect from the genre. Namely: a goal. In place of traditional elements like social interaction and leveling, we get a shooter sandbox that is extremely laissez faire about what you do with your time. Whether that's a good thing or not depends on what kind of player you are.

Trion Worlds has already promised five downloadable content packs for Defiance, bundled as a Season Pass for $40.
