Torchlight 2 grinds its way to a million sales

Any fears that Torchlight 2 might suffer from its proximity to Diablo 3 or sequel fatigue from the first game can be put to rest. The game has managed to top a million sales after approximately three months on the market--a feat its predecessor only reached after a year and a half, even with the advantage of appearing on two platforms.

Torchlight 2 dev wants to avoid paid DLC, pledges free updates

Torchlight 2 dev wants to avoid paid DLC, pledges free updates

Torchlight 2 is well on its way to becoming a million-seller, according to CEO Max Schaefer, citing the game's "well over a quarter" million pre-orders. Reaching a million sales will make the game instantly profitable, citing a development budget of under $10 million.

Demand for the game, coupled with the rise of digital distribution made it possible for team to price the game at $20--even as it gets favorably compared to the fully-priced Diablo series. That's key to Runic Games' long-term strategy. "In the long run we want to be known as the people who have the best value in gaming," Schaefer said.

As September 20 looms close, one might expect to see Torchlight 2 developer Runic Games scrambling in its final days. The recently announced release date is approaching fast. Torchlight 2 launching September 20

Torchlight 2 launching September 20

The original Torchlight came out when Diablo III still seemed woefully far away, and more than filled that gaping action-RPG hole with its charming clicking ways. The sequel was once supposed to launch before but it turns out we're all still just as excited for Torchlight II even though Blizzard beat it to the click-punch. Good news! Developer Runic Games has finally announced that it'll launch for PC and Mac on September 20.

Torchlight 2 dev shares progress update

Torchlight 2 dev shares progress update

Diablo III has come, and some bitter cynics might say gone, but Torchlight II is snug still in its cocoon, growing legs, wings, axes, helmets, and all the other bits an action-RPG needs. But when will it come, and why is it taking so long? Runic president Travis Baldree has said the studio's being "deliberately vague" about release dates, and shared a little insight into what's going on.

If you fancy having a gander at the Torchlight II beta, this weekend may bring your chance. Starting today, developer Runic is hosting a short stress test, and will be doling out heaps more invites.
