Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain: seen at E3 2014

Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain: seen at E3 2014

WIth Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, we were given a short but undeniably enticing taste of what to expect from the open-world Phantom Pain. And while the hands-off demonstration at E3 didn't entirely resolve my concerns for Metal Gear's transition to an open-world, it was nonetheless an impressive showing.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' Xbox & PlayStation-exclusive levels are not exclusive

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes aimed to displease fanboys of both platforms by giving PlayStation owners the exclusive Deja Vu mission and Xbox owners the exclusive Jamais Vu mission. However, in an attempt to further anger fanboys, Kojima Productions has announced that those two platform-exclusive missions aren't exclusive at all anymore. Whoops.

As noted in our review, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is very short. Our Steve beat the game in about two hours, but if you know what you're doing and skip optional objectives, you can speed through the game in ten minutes.

Solid Snake named for animal influence, says Kojima

Solid Snake named for animal influence, says Kojima

Metal Gear Solid's main character, Solid Snake, has the gravel voice and mullet of Snake Plissken from the Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. films. But even with creator Hideo Kojima's film-loving sensibilities, and contrary to some previous comments, his name had more to do with the reputation of his animal namesake than the Kurt Russell character.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes unlocks exclusive content in The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes unlocks exclusive content in The Phantom Pain

Given that Ground Zeroes serves as a prologue for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, it's unsurprising that the two games will connect with one another. First up, early physical and digital copies of Ground Zeroes will include exclusive DLC for use within The Phantom Pain. The DLC will give players "additional resources" for a Mother Base area that's introduced in Ground Zeroes and plays a "central role" in The Phantom Pain. According to Konami, players will get "an edge" with the add-on.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes video compares generations

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes video compares generations

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is coming to both current and next generation consoles, thanks to the versatility of the game's Fox Engine. However, the next-gen versions will cost $10 more than their current-gen counterparts. If you still have current-gen consoles connected to your TV, will you be better off saving money? Or will the game's shiny next-gen bells and whistles be worth the added cost? A new comparison video from Kojima Productions will give you the evidence you need.

In particular, he drew comparisons to other short games and said the concerns over its length have been "trumped-up."

Metal Gear Solid 5 has rare 'Sexual Violence' ESRB descriptor

We're used to seeing certain descriptors repeat in the ESRB ratings: Strong Language, Blood and Gore, that sort of thing. Some bit of content in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes has earned it one of the rarest descriptors that the ESRB gives: "Sexual Violence."

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros will also have exclusive Xbox content

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will also have exclusive content on Xbox platforms, a new promo video has revealed. But what will it be? There's no word yet, but PlayStation players don't get too much. They get the "Deja Vu Mission," which has you taking control of a low-res 32-bit Snake based on his appearance in the original Metal Gear Solid on PS1. Hopefully, we'll see some skateboarding on Xbox?

The relationship between Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain have many players confused. What is the role of this extended prologue?

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes videos show off daytime mission, Xbox One graphics

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes videos show off daytime mission, Xbox One graphics

Kojima Productions showed off a first look of the next-gen version of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes at TGS last week. Apparently, Kojima did much more than show off 12 minutes of footage. In fact, he took time to show off a brand new daytime level and footage from the Xbox One version of the game.

Our first look at the game had us a bit skeptical of some of the new additions made to the gameplay. However, you can watch the footage for yourself. Be warned, as is typical of footage from Kojima's studio, it's quite lengthy.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes video: twelve minutes of PS4 gameplay from TGS

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes video: twelve minutes of PS4 gameplay from TGS

Kojima Productions showed off a new real-time demo of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes at Tokyo Game Show today. While the level is identical to the one we previewed a few weeks ago, the TGS build was running off of PS4 spec.

The next-gen version of the game looks marginally better than the current-gen, with lighting being the key difference between the two. However, as Kojima promised, the two games are identical beyond visuals. You can watch the new twelve minute demonstration (in Japanese) after the break.
