Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain launch trailer is the latest goodbye from Hideo Kojima

This is labeled as the launch trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but it acts as much more than that. It acts as a touching retrospective of the series and one of the final goodbyes to Snake from creator Hideo Kojima

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to launch next week and, in many ways, it's going to be the end of an era. Yes, it marks Hideo Kojima's final work with publisher Konami and the man himself is very much aware of this. That's why this new launch trailer, produced and edited by Kojima, carries a sense of finality to it.

The trailer not only looks at the upcoming Phantom Pain, but takes a look back at the Metal Gear Solid series through the ages. Think of it less as a launch trailer and more as a touching retrospective and a swansong for series creator Kojima.

But is it the end for Kojima? Certainly not. Kojima assured fans of that just a few nights ago.

Watch the whole thing below. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain arrives next week on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
