Batman: Arkham Origins 'Cold, Cold Heart' video shows new gameplay

It's odd to think that Arkham Knight isn't the only Batman adventure coming this year. No, there's still the "Cold, Cold Heart" DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins.

Starring Mr. Freeze, the new adventure takes place after the events of the main campaign. Creative director Eric Holmes and game director Benoit Richer explain that WB Montreal wanted to include the villain in Origins, but couldn't figure out a way to make him fit the game's assassins narrative. Freeze isn't an assassin, it's against his character.

Batman: Arkham Knight preview: a license to drive

Batman: Arkham Knight preview: a license to drive

What does a next-gen Batman: Arkham game look like? Sure, there's the promise of a larger city. You'll even be able to ride around Gotham using the Batmobile. But, more than anything, the most prominent feature enabled by next-gen tech are the visuals. Simply put, Arkham Knight is gorgeous.

Take a look at these screenshots. It really does look that good. And it's all the more impressive when you consider that the city is so much larger this time around. Seeing lights reflect off the Batmobile as it drives across wet pavement is a true feast for the eyes. This certainly doesn't look like a cross-gen game.

Batman: Arkham Knight is 'real next-gen,' map is five times the size of Arkham City

Unlikes its predecessor, Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Knight is exclusive to the next-gen. It's one of the first games to ditch cross-gen, focusing exclusively on harnessing the power of the new consoles. "Obviously, you see a lot of games that are cross-gen, and they feel a bit reined in because of that," director Sefton Hill said. "Because we were able to make that decision quite early, we were able to be more ambitious with the design and make a real, genuine next-gen game."

Batman: Arkham Knight won't have multiplayer

Batman: Arkham Knight won't have multiplayer

Batman: Arkham Origins had a multiplayer mode we weren't particularly fond of. Outsourced to Splash Damage, the online offering had Batman and Robin go against a group of thugs. However, the newly-announced Arkham Knight won't feature multiplayer of any kind, with developer Rocksteady saying they're too busy to do anything with it.

Batman: Arkham Origins 'Cold Cold Heart' DLC tells Mr Freeze's story on April 22

As promised, Batman: Arkham Origins will be getting story-based DLC. "Cold Cold Heart" will be available on April 22, and it will tell the origin story of Mr. Freeze in the Arkhamverse. Described as a "mini chapter of the game," this add-on will include in-game missions alongside a brand new story.

New gadgets will also be introduced in the expansion. Of note is the XC, short for "extreme conditions." It will change gameplay to make Batman more resilient to the extreme weather effects of Mr. Freeze's henchmen.

Batman: Arkham Origins patch coming next week to address major bugs, WB apologizes

Batman: Arkham Origins patch coming next week to address major bugs, WB apologizes

Apparently, many players have been experiencing serious bugs in Batman: Arkham Origins. Crucially, one bug affects the ability to actually play the game at all, with "Continue" no longer showing up in the game's main menu. Another bug has the Batman falling out of the world in an endless loop, making it impossible to complete certain missions and progress through the campaign.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you all for your patience as we work to resolve the issues," the company said in a statement. And of course, a patch is in the works.

Batman: Arkham Origins TV commercial transforms Bruce Wayne

Batman: Arkham Origins TV commercial transforms Bruce Wayne

Video game trailers don't need gameplay to be great. Warner Bros understands this. In creating the TV spot for Batman: Arkham Origins, they've tapped into the story of Bruce Wayne--a well-known part of pop culture canon. By showing his transformation from child to The Dark Knight, we get to see Batman as a younger, angrier man than we've seen in previous Arkham games.

Directed by Tim Miller and animated by Blur Studio, this commercial is definitely a must-watch.
