Morning Discussion

Hump day again! I am already anticipating the weekend, when I shall be doing several things I enjoy. Enjoyable things are often exciting! I shall endeavour to consume and inbibe substances I find enjoyable, some of which would statistically be alcoholic. That alcohol certainly does have a noticeable effect upon the human body!

I hope the USA is enjoying National Cookie Cutter Week as much as I am. That lovely little piece of cephalopod art up top is by Meg Lyman, by the way.

I miss the Thief games. Is there going to be a Thief4? I remember some gossip about that.

I know right? It could be awesome, but probably won't, and I thought the trilogy was nice and complete, story wise. :(

Well Thief 3 was a nice surprise, I enjoyed that a lot even though I wasn't expecting much. You never know.

I remember when I used to love every game Eidos put out. Now I can't think of the last one I played and didn't want to pull my eyes out.

Eidos has always had a mixed reputation. I can't understand following a publisher religiously, with the exception of the old incarnations of Sierra, Origin and LucasArts.

Blizzard, Valve, Bioware, there are definitely some that are just a cut above the rest.

Wait, I forgot Blizzard and Bioware. I wouldn't include Valve, just because they publish so much now that there's plenty of crap in their stable.

Bioware is published by EA, and all Valve "publishes" outside of it's own software is some indy/micro dev stuff (I don't count stuff sold on Steam that has a non-digital presence). For some reason I read "developers" so I just started naming some.

Batman Arkham Asylum was good and Eidos. I was suprised as well, but I think it was more likely to do with the developer and the ip manager being more ballsy and in control than Eidos

Batman Arkham Asylum is the most recent Eidos game I played and it was great.

Ach! Gah! Just had a quick look at the jobs page on Eidos Montreal. It seems to indicate it'll be using UE3. Does UE3 really have the chops for a new Thief game d'you think, lighting wise? I know the last one used a modified Unreal Engine 2 and looked fantastic, and that much can achieved with the UE3, but I was just hoping for something new and fantastic.

As long as it doesn't have that typical, overly-specular, "Saran wrap'd" look - as people call it - seemingly indicative of little care and attention to lighting above and beyond what can be done "out of the box" with the engine, it'll be a start.

I'm way more concerned about the sound than the lighting.

Actually the dark engine kinda sucks for sound - the sound propagation has to be manually set up with room brushes, etc. It was used to good effect in the Thief games, but many modern engines have the potential to handle it better.

There's a total conversion mod for Doom 3 that ported Thief over to using the Doom 3 engine.

Dark Mod is great, but it's not correct to say they "Ported Thief" - it's thief-like, but all-new content, and mission makers can't directly reference thief's factions or characters.

Regardless, I imagine we'll see most of the Thief fan mission makers move over at some point - running through the training level is enough to prove it's potential.

Next to the Quake series of games (which aren't a series of games so much as a lifestyle for me for 10 years)... Thief is the best series out there. I really enjoyed all aspects of them.

I recently downloaded Thief 2 and 3, only to find that they wouldn't run on Windows 7. Cried. What made matters even worse is that I could get into the Thief 2 game and play it for about 5 minutes before it booted me to the desktop.

What you describe of Thief 2 sounds more like a multiprocessor issue, not Windows 7. Have you tried setting processor affinity or manually tweaking the executable?
