I'm enjoying it... but there's just... something. I'm not a civ pro or anything... but is anyone else coming to some of these same conclusions?:
1) Cities states are pretty worthles, unless you exploit them via Siam.
- They don't really go on offense... ever. I've seen them declare war countless times, just to sit there and do nothing.
- They get steamrolled so easily. Forget diplomatic victory... 80% of them are dead by late game.
2) The AI can't use the oceans worth a damn.
- Out of the 4-complete games I've done, I've not once seen the AI use its navy in any effective capacity... or even try to. I've seen whole conitents go to war, but not send any ships to attack.
3) Military victory is 10 times easier than any other victory. In fact, if you are going to try for any other victory, you may as well just stop, and change to a military one. Because:
- You need vast resources (ie cities) to complete any of the victories.
- To get vast resources, you need a big army to conquer dudes.
- If you've wiped out an AI's army, they won't be recovering any time soon, so you may as well just conquer the whole empire... and so on, until you wipe everyone out.
Am I doing it wrong?

- Before upgrading check to see if its not cheaper to simply make new units and disband the old ones.
- Once you have infrastructure maximized, only keep one worker per city active, disband all others.
- Keeping up city states is much easier if you build wonders, have great people regularly and let the enemy destroy them, retake the city and give it back.
- Only try keeping one or two city states on friend status, ally status is worthless because they are too weak to help you in case of war.
- Build improvements with low or no maintenance first, always build some units in between, do not simply queue up too many buildings with +3 maintenance, only if necessary.
- Wait until you have sea harbor and then build the roads that you need. Roads for means of movement are not so important any more, they are just good to connect cities, your military units should be near your borders anyway.
- Discover, explore, pillage whenever you can - this all brings tons of gold.
- Also when offering trade to other civs, NEVER pick what you want, but start off with what you can trade, then the AI will usually will make an offer with Gold and/or Gold per turn PLUS a luxury item.
