If the service is genuinely shutting down, then yeah, notice can be abrupt. BOOM--the floor just dropped out. That sucks, but it happens. But unless that is the case, a provider such as GOG that allows customers to invest in their service cannot, under any circumstances, prevent clients from accessing that service. If the GOG is getting a technical and/or aesthetic makeover, or if it's relaunching as a completely new service, the provider should issue a message saying so without simultaneously preventing access to the investments I made in the service. If preventing said access is necessary, saying so and explaining what's happening should be made part of the message.
And when I say a service "cannot, under any circumstances, prevent clients from accessing that service", I'm not referring to sporadic malfunctions such as servers going down or whatever. That kind of thing happens. But for something this serious--and whatever it is, CDP obviously considers it a serious enough matter to temporarily pull the plug on GOG and prevent customers from accessing their catalogs--it's not right. If they feel it's necessary, they owe us an explanation (or at least something to the effect of, "This isn't permanent; more new forthcoming") at the time when the temporary disconnect is put into effect, not during some after-the-fact press conference.
The message GOG chose to issue is ambiguous at best, and people have reason to be upset. If the issue is anything short of the service going belly up, CDP has handled the ordeal horribly and should expect backlash. I'm not saying I believe those who are vowing never to buy another GOG game again. I'm saying CDP has rolled the dice and decided to gamble the trust their customers have placed in them and their service, and that's something that is not easily earned.
