I realize we're not going to convince one another here, but, for me at least, I think the distinction is important. Calling SW a sci-fi movie is a disservice to science fiction movies (Contact, Children of Men, Blade Runner, etc.) that deal with specific predictive themes. I believe this is a fair distinction to make, same as saying Romance stories deal with themes of relationships and love. You can put Romeo & Juliet into a 24th century setting, but that doesn't make it a SF movie (even if it has a setting that's been popularized by other science fiction stories).
