Sequels are great and also safe to the industry because just like Hollywood some knucklehead can put up a graph to show how great FPS's are doing and everybody is playing FPS's and Half Life does so well so let's make Half Life episode 3/4/5/6/infinity because we know we will make money. Rinse and repeat for RTS's, MMORPG's, etc. etc. etc.
Or...
Take a chance with something that there is no prior research for, with a developer with no track record, something totally new that no other developer has ever thought of but through the passion of the developer and the ability of him/her to show that this gameplay is fun (with fun being the most important factor) some foolish venture capitalist sinks some money into it and suddenly we have something that is truly, actually, innovative instead of derivative. DOOM. Dune II. Civilization. X-Com. The prior examples are endless.
I personally enjoy the direction we are going with peripherals and game interactivity. Guitar Hero, the Wii Remote, DDR pads, etc. are getting people more invested into games while at the same time make games more accessible. I think perhaps one future of esports will be video games that use technology and perhaps physical peripherals to expand the horizons of athletic sports beyond a big grassy field and a pigskin.
