So imagine playing Doom and it's all the same down to every detail, the fire speed on the shotgun, the way you move and so forth, except you get XP for killing imps, and there isn't just one shotgun, but a dozen different types of shotguns, pistols, changuns, rocket launchers and so forth, all with different properties and ratings as you would expect. Then you have a small number of character attributes, like in Diablo, which you periodically upgrade as you advance through levels, stuff that would augment your speed, your health pool, the quantity of ammo types you can carry, how sophsticated the weapons you can use are and so forth.
The only difference between normal Doom and hypothetical RPG Doom is that the game wouldn't control your progression so much by you solving puzzles or collecting keys but rather whether or not you've got the gear and stats to take on the more difficult monsters. It's really perfectly suited, if you play Doom on a hard difficulty there's already mobs of enemies for you to take on, the levels are flat and labyrinthine, the gameplay is simple with no scripted sequences or anything elaborate so that you could easily generate tons and tons of content for the player to go through... it's perfect. I wonder why someone hasn't done it.
Or, likewise the same thing except with Rune.
