I want to pimp Dwarf Fortress because the new version is out and it rules!
Here is the website for the game: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
And the Dwarf Fortress wiki: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page
Dwarf Fortress is an ascii-based strategy game with a ton of complexity and depth. Think sim city meets Lord of the Rings meets Nethack. It has quite a steep learning curve, like many ascii games, but the bit of effort required to play the game is well worth it. There is also an adventure mode that's much closer to a traditional rogue-like.
There are many cool things about Dwarf Fortress so I'll share only one of my favorites: at the beginning of the game, Dwarf Fortress procedurally generates the entire world. So at any point you can start a whole new, randomly generated world with its own geography, ecology, myths, and civilizations. Awesome!
For those who have already tried DF, they just released a new version and it has a lot of great additions. For one, they've added a new dimension to the game (literally) - you can now toggle between different height levels, allowing you to build fortresses up and down through mountains. The new version has completely reinvigorated the game for me. I recommend everyone try it! I should also mention that this is an alpha, and is totally free.

I had my first big fortress in the new version get \o/ BURNINATED \o/ by a dragon earlier this week. It was Summer of the second year, and a human caravan had just arrived. I am happily watching the wagons roll toward my fortress, expecting to finally buy an anvil and get started forging weapons and armor, when the game pauses. I see a big D and the message The dragon Rakbin Irnatmita has come. Shit. Mr. Irnatmita swoops down on the human caravan and breathes fire, killing the merchants and guards instantly and destroying the wagons. At this point, the merchants' loot is scattered all over the charred, smoking ground, so my dwarves happily start to run out to pick things up and carry them to the fortress. Meanwhile, the dragon is lazily drifting from side to side, belching streams of fire and incinerating dwarves.
I finally got smart and toggled the option to make "All dwarves stay inside," hoping to halt the madness, but of course then the dragon wandered over toward the main entrance to my fort. He burst through the gates, breathing fiery death into the hallway, where a whole cluster of dwarves were idiotically pathing toward the door, then cancelling jobs because the objects they coveted were outside. Many dwarves died that day.
Then the great scaly beast had his way with my fortress. The dragon was going up and down the central stairs, breathing fire everywhere, while my lone Fortress Guard fought him. So fucking metal. I had a second Fortress Guard, but he was sleeping in the barracks a few squares away this whole time, oblivious to his comrade's danger. Finally the dragon and the guard wandered back toward the fortress gate, where my stonefall traps wounded the dragon until he fell unconscious. My battered but still-breathing guard promptly collapsed from exhaustion next to the dazed dragon. A quickly-drafted miner finished off the beast.
Things continued to burn for weeks, filling the fortress with smoke, while dwarves who had been wounded in the attack slowly died from heat or bled to death, one by one. The survivors tried to construct new tombs for the fallen, but ran out of room for new coffins before they ran out of bodies.
Eventually, after several dwarves went insane from grief over losing friends and family members (and the game slowed to a crawl from the slowdown bug with tantrums plus all the smoke), I abandoned the fortress.
Time to start anew. Strike the Earth!
