Dark Souls 2 video makes a case for the PC port

A side-by-side comparison video for Dark Souls 2 shows just how much better the PC version looks.

Dark Souls 2 is preparing to release on PC, with enough graphical options to make console players jealous. Suffice to say it will look better, but how much better? A side-by-side comparison video lets you answer that question with your own eyeballs.

The comparison video from IGN keeps the camera angles and characters almost identical in every shot, so you can get a proper appreciation for the visual fidelity. Check it out below and give yourself a little pat on the back for your patience, seeing as it looks like you'll be rewarded for it with a nicer looking game. The PC version is due April 25.

I'm getting the PC version, but this doesn't showcase any reason for those staying on the PS3 version to be upset.

        60fps?

framerate at 60 on the pc has a huge impact on gameplay. 30 feels already sluggish but it would drop into boderline unplayable in areas light blight town or when fighting sif on ps3. resolution and things like downsampling and ssoa/hbao made the game look immensely better.

what you are referring to might be the initial build the had shown which had different lighting and much more detailed architecture until the noticed that the game was completely unplayable in the same way blightown was. they had to reverse it but had already made a huge deal about the supposed new engine and new lighting system. so people though it was the equivalent of bullshots.

Actually it is not apparent from that video that the PC version is running at 60fps. It looks choppy just like the ps3 version, I imagine they did that so you could compare the textures.

well, a maximum of 30. i think if your video is less than 30 it'll allow that

yes its correct, you can upload higher rate videos but it will automatically downscale it. and you are not the only one who didnt know, you will find shitloads of dudes uploading 24 to 30 to 60 fps comparison videos on youtube.

You think it is. And when you play it you may even feel you were right to think that.

But the real Dark Souls 2 begins in NG+. Prepare to die (again).

It has been hard to watch everyone else talk about playing this game while I've been waiting for the PC version, but I am hoping it will be well worth it.

Same here, and what kills me is I might just have to wait even longer due to some financial reasons. I guess the good thing is eventually the threads and everyone will stop talking about it by the time I get around to being able to play it.

it was pretty easy to ignore threads. the problem was to avoid listening to people spoiling random shit in podcast or friends talking about the ps3 version. also i was tempted to watch videos at giant bomb.

i can't wait to play a version of this that doesn't run like shit and have menus that take ten seconds to load. Switching weapons mid fight is damn near impossible unless you know exactly where it is in your inventory since half the time the icon doesn't even show up on the PS3

If they do 60FPS and the graphics options correctly, he might not need to do anything.

..unless he can increase displacement mapping, redraw the textures, place assests, and write an enitrely new lighting engine.

he might do some stuff for proper ssoa combinations but the most important settings seem to be implemented already. resolution and framerate were the pressing issues initially and it seems those are present.

Is there a way to lock Dark Souls 2 (PC) to 30fps?
So I'm not actually joking or something here, I've played 85 hours of DS1 at 30fps (for all kinds of reasons ok) and now that I've been loaned a card capable of 60, I found it gross, it just looked wrong, like one of those 200 hz TVs interpolating frames.

There's a couple of other reasons I'd prefer 30 too.

If someone makes a patch to unlock the frame rate to 120, then you can probably also use that to set it to 30.

Also the difference from PS3 to PC is pretty terrible in that video. The resolution is obviously much better on PC but the difference in lighting, effects, even view distance - simply doesn't exist.

I'd take a guess the DSFix people will be taking a crack at the files to see if they can't make the PC version look a lot better than it does. I know a properly mod'd Dark Souls 1 can look quite different from stock and honestly -possibly better than Dark Souls 2 looks in that footage.

Wasn't the biggest difference for DS1 (the really beautiful screenshots being shown around here a while back) were just internally rendered at 4x and then downsampled?

          • reply
            April 10, 2014 6:11 PM

the biggest thing was probably the implementation of ssoa/hbao and other ambient occlusion methods for people who didnt have a monster pc to support extreme internal resolutions.

Well not just that, because I tried that now that someone loaned me this beef card - I believe there's some texture packs they are using too.
The other problem with Dark Souls 2, and I'm TRYING to stay positive but the level design / world - in almost every screenshot or video looks vastly blander than DS1 - just big big open flat spaces. :/

Anyhow, DS's weakest point seems to be the lighting, shadows and shader stuff or whatever it is - both 1 and 2.

Seems like you could just cap 30 fps on your vid cards settings. (just like you would cap 60 or 58)

I was skeptical because the original Miyazaki had moved on but its become my favorite of the series especially the co-op and PVP aspects. The art design is different and in my opinion not quite as good as the first two but everything else is fantastic. I just finished NG++ and am about to move to NG+++.
