Report: Brink dev working on licensed game

Splash Damage is at work on a licensed game that uses the Brink multiplayer engine, based on "one of the biggest pop culture brands of the last 50 years."

23

Splash Damage, developer of Brink, is now at work on a licensed game that will apparently reuse Brink's engine with a recognizable cast of characters. However, the company in charge of the IP has reportedly stepped away from console publishing.

IndustryGamers says the deal is with a "major entertainment brand," and says it's based on "one of the biggest American pop culture brands of the last 50 years." Otherwise, the project is being kept in the dark at the moment.

So, a 50-year-old franchise that lends itself to a multiplayer shooter, owned by a company that has shied away from consoles. We're inclined to guess Marvel -- the company is now owned by Disney, and Disney Interactive Studios moved more into mobile app development after closing some PC and console studios. But that's pure speculation, and maybe they'll surprise us all by showing off their tight new multiplayer shooter based on Mork & Mindy.

[UPDATE: Since the initial story broke, Splash Damage CEO Paul Wedgwood tweeted to VG247's UK News Editor Johnny Cullen what's more or less a blanket denial that runs contrary to the initial report by IndustryGamers. It reads:

@JohnnyCullen Yes. We're not working with Disney. We're not building a pop culture IP. We're only using BRINK tech for BRINK updates atm

It would seem as though there's nothing to see here people, after all. Kindly, move along. That said, we'll keep you apprised of any new developments on potential upcoming Splash Damage projects as they are revealed.]

That would be pretty awesome. Especially if they make a special edition which comes with a device that sprays fake blood in your face when you kill someone on screen.

I really wish they would expand the scope. Brink would'be been so much cooler if it was a Battlefield sized level instead of something tiny. Every level felt like meat grinder.

Yeah I remember Splash Damage talking about that philosophy when making the game. They wanted the action to be more concentrated than Quake Wars. Maybe some sort of Brink/Quake Wars hybrid would have worked better.

Me too - People shitted all over Brink because it was basically ET with customization - Which is apparently too complicated.

I had a blast with the game. It was definitely buggy at release though. The customization is what made the game interesting... oh well.

Brink, at release, was TF2's goldrush/dustbowl gametype plus the unlockable system from MW/BF.

And it was terrible. They took the really bad ideas from two popular games and turned it into a piece of garbage.

I think peole shat on Brink because it was buggy, ugly, poorly made, and not as fun as ET.

The launch wasn't exactly smooth, but to call it ugly and poorly made does the game a HUGE disservice. :(

If it is a Marvel property, what does it mean for Activision's Marvel licenses for Spider-Man and X-Men? The last titles from that set (X-Men Destiny, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows?) were panned pretty bad by critics.

Now that I think back it was no worse than the BF3 release. The only thing BF3 had that Brink didn't was the fact that it was/is a good game. Brink was a horrible disappointment.

I only have experience with Brink. And it sucked. The problems were fundamental design issues and not technical.

Those things are extremely difficult to fix.

They also haven't made any other games besides Enemy Territory for the past 8 years. For fans of ET, Brink is pretty good, but still sort of broken.

Loved both ET and ETQW (which is probably my favorite team multiplayer game ever). Brink seemed like a game that just lacked focus, and I can think of large parts of that game I'd cut entirely which i think would make it better (especially if you could devote the time and budget used to create them elsewhere).

I'm willing to give them another chance, but they better make a demo or better yet an early, lengthy beta so that people who like the types of games they make can help them avoid some of the stuff that hurt Brink.

Brink had such potential and for me, was such a let down. The faint traces of a storyline, insane amounts of shooting and very little damage, and quirky parkour stuff. Nothing that amazing and again, WHY DO HEADSHOTS NOT KILL PEOPLE in Brink.
