        I use a set rule for my portfolio. I only keep 35% of my entire investments (401k doesn't count) in what I consider non-stable funds. Things like stocks. So if I have a stock, and it goes up, the total amount of my portfolio changes making the mix of non-stable investments go above 35%. So then I look at what investment it makes sense to sell at that time to get me back down to 35% and transfer the difference into a stable fund.
        
        I've lost out on gains doing this, but i've also protected myself from drops. All in all, using this simple practice I've been able to beat the market every year and even gaurd myself from serious drops in 2008.
