Morning Discussion
I started playing the singleplayer campaign last week and scarcely a minute goes by without the game fading to black and entering a cutscene. If I'm lucky it'll be a third-person cutscene--something I'm rarely excited to see in an FPS--but a terrible proportion of them are from a first-person perspective with the game deciding where 'my' character should stand and what they find interesting to look at. I'm constantly ripped out of the world to observe a fun-ish skit. It's a poor second-person narrative--"You stand there, staring gormlessly while someone else does something interesting."
This might be more understandable if I were playing as a definite character, if the game were attempting to force me into 'being' Marlowe, but I don't see that. "Hey!" the game would be yelling. "You're this nondescript, quiet white male, yeah? The one with barely more prescribed personality than Gordon Freeman. Isn't that great?" No.
I imagine DICE was attempting to boost the cinematic, re-told story feel but the cutscenes do little that wouldn't be better in first-person and add nowhere near as much as they take away. Perhaps the cutscenes are simply for technical reasons, masking asset streaming or similar. No matter what, it's weird and unpleasant.
It's a shame because while the cutscenes are terrible, the mish-mash of 'realistic' and arcade play is weird and trying to figure out who's shotgunning your face through a thick cloud of smoke is awful, the game is quite enjoyable. I have a jolly jaunt to venture off on with a wide and wonderful selection of shotguns and sniper rifles--that'll do for me.

I want to go home and play my really old video game!
What do YOU want to do?-

Yup. Hired Raven for 1 day, got her sniper rifle, put my sniper on the roof of a building and killed dudes while they were distracted by the poor doomed militia. Once he ran out of ammo, we just hid in side the building and waited for them to come. Worked out OK. Still mostly out of ammo for that sniper rifle, though.
I've now captured Chitzena and the Drassen and Chitzena SAMs. Almost ready to move on to the next town. I'm kinda annoyed by the lack of ammo for the better guns I've found, and I also don't really like the time pressure. I need to heal up and repair, but I keep getting attacked if I sit there long enough to do that.
Love the game overall, though. Fun + guns.-
Aww you sorta cheezed it :D
I did the battle in the southern sector of Drassen. Had 2 guys in the restaurant in the north ducking behind the windows. Two more high AP, grenade throwing, guys moving around the east, and two more in the middle hiding between the windows. It was tough but I managed to come out of it with very little damage to my guys. -

I had a hard time, too, and I couldn't find any kind of tutorial material on the Bear's Pit forums. Most of the people there are longtime regulars and know the game like the back of their hands, so all the conversation is about the latest mods and whatnot. I really wanted something that just laid out "here's what you do for the first few game days," and I couldn't find it.
I am starting to figure it out, but it's by trial and error, which I think was expected in games of that era, but I don't really have time for it now. I'd rather get told what the "correct" way to play is, then work from there, so I don't have to struggle through the learning phase.
All that having been said, I find the gameplay really rewarding. I'm playing with the 1.13 fan patch/mod, so I have no idea what the vanilla game was like, but I love the tactical combat and the steady progress of getting more and better equipment for your guys. I find the strategic metagame a little tedious at times, but I think I probably like it more as I get better at the game.
If you like tactical turn-based games, I highly recommend putting in the effort. There aren't a lot of these games to choose from and this one has been lovingly taken care of by the fans.-

Meh, I'm well into it now and doing OK on the Experienced difficulty. I turned on "enemies drop all equipment" which makes the game easier, but I enjoy it. My only regret is I wish I had bumped Bobby Ray's selection up to "Great" (#2) instead of leaving it on Normal. I don't want to have access to the entire catalog at the very beginning, but not being able to buy attachments or ammo for the guns I have looted is just annoying.
