With weapon crafting coming to Destiny 2 via The Witch Queen, so too has a new Exotic material called Ascendant Alloy. This ultra-rare material is used to craft Enhanced Traits and unlock Catalysts at the Relic. To put it mildly, you’re going to want a lot of these, so let’s dive into the different ways you can obtain them.
Ascendant Alloy drops from only a few activities in Destiny 2 and are otherwise limited to vendor upgrades, purchases, or through seasonal rewards.
The Weekly Campaign Missions on Savathun’s Throne World and Neptune can both drop Ascendant Alloys as a reward. The higher the difficulty, the more likely you are to receive one: Rare on Hero, Uncommon on Legend, and Common on Master. If you can manage, playing through on Master will give you the best chance at stockpiling the material.
You can also play The Wellspring on Master difficulty, though this is an Uncommon drop compared to a Common drop on the same difficulty for the story missions. This is worth doing if you also require certain weapon patterns. Accessing Wellspring and Witch Queen difficulties requires ranking up the Throne World vendor, Fynch. There are a handful of quests in Destiny 2 that also reward Ascendant Alloy. These quests are Reshaping the Enigma, Ascendant Alloy Requisition, and Foundry Shaping. Each of these teaches players about weapon crafting and focuses on a specific weapon.
Another option is to purchase one Ascendant Alloy from Master Rahool. He will sell one Ascendant Alloy each week for 400 Legendary Shards. It’s a high price, but worth it if you’ve no other options.
Additionally, every season pass will offer two Ascendant Shards. If you purchase the annual pass of an expansion, you’ve guaranteed you’ll get up to eight Ascendant Shards across the year. This may change with The Final Shape given Bungie is shifting to a three episode format and Season Passes are set to increase to 200 ranks.
Ranking up Banshee-44, the Gunsmith, to Rank 16 will reward one Ascendant Shard. If you can manage, level him up each season by dismantling gear. This one is the most time-consuming of all the methods.
Finally, starting with The Final Shape, players will be able to get three Ascendant Alloys in the Secret Stash. This is a reward that is offered once per Episode. The Secret Stash also includes Ascendant Shards, Upgrade Modules, an Exotic Cipher, and more.
Getting Ascendant Alloys in Destiny 2 is vital for crafting some of the best weapons in the game. Each crafted weapon will need at least two Ascendant Alloys to be a true god roll, which means it’s quite easy to wind up with none if you’re making guns each season.
