Child of Eden Hands-on Preview

A decade ago, Q? Entertainment founder Tetsuya Mizuguchi led the team that produced Rez. Its inscrutable combination of shooting action, driving electronica music, and vividly imagined cyberscapes held an almost primitive appeal for those with whom it clicked. Though there was no sequel, only the remake Rez HD for XBLA, Rez finally gets a true spiritual successor in the upcoming Child of Eden. At a special event held during TGS, I got a chance to play this new experience, both with a controller and with Microsoft's Kinect motion controller peripheral.

Weekend Confirmed Episode 27

After a couple of far-flung weeks with shows from PAX and the International special, Garnett, Brian, and Jeff reunite in the studio, and just in time too because they've got a whole lot to cover. Whatcha' Been Playin? gets things started with some mopping up from TGS including The Third Birthday, Ni no Kuni, and a couple others. Valkyria Chronicles 2 and the upcoming 3 which was also at TGS get some love. And all three of the guys have tales of global conquest from late night Civ 5 sessions. The Warning poses the question of whether the quest to westernize has become a distraction to Japanese game development and, of course, your Gran Turismo 5 responses get their due. Lara's continuing co-op struggles, the apparent cancellation of Milo, and naturally some Halo:Reach news highlight the Front Page to wrap it all up.

Tokyo Game Show 2010 Report

Related Topics – Tokyo Game Show 2010

Last year, the diminishing relevance of the Tokyo Game Show to the global videogame community left as big an impression as any of the games on display. That put this year's show under the microscope as watchers look to see whether Japan, one of the cradles of the videogame industry, can reassert itself. A handful of the titles on display offered some indication that the development community there still taps into a unique creative sensibility, but even among the best, none shone brightly enough to be the definitive star of the show.

From the western perspective, Last Guardian for the PS3 stood as the most exciting prospect again this year. The new trailer and Ueda's update on the game's development became one of the top topics of conversation from the show. But it got overshadowed in the Japanese domestic market by the latest edition of Monster Hunter—Portable 3rd—for the PSP. Four-player co-op demo tables attracted throngs of attendees, allowing players to experience the action much in the same way the current version captures groups across Tokyo. That appeal is lost, though, on much of the rest of the world. Read more »

Set during the ill-conceived conflict, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam will feature four new maps "from the rice fields of the Phu Bai Valley to the napalm scorched earth of Hill 137." New toys include 15 weapons and 6 vehicles, such as the Huey helicopter, T54 tank and PBR patrol boat.
