Magicka PvP due June 21 for free

As if Magicka didn't already suffer enough magical 'friendly fire' incidents, developer Arrowhead and publisher Paradox have announced that wizard-on-wizard violence will be formalised on June 21 when the PvP mode launches for free.

Along with classic Deathmatch, which players are apparently quite capable of emulating for themselves at the moment anyway, there'll be another two modes for duelling wizards. Brawl will give players or teams a limited number of lives for them to fritter away until there's only one survivor. Kreitor mode, inspired by an eponymous fan, will see new Magicks unlocking at intervals, so the match changes over time as wizards get new toys to play with. Read more »

Warhammer 40k: Kill Team announced

Warhammer 40k: Kill Team announced

The 'grimdark' future of war is coming over all-arcade in Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, a twin-stick shooter announced today by publisher THQ. Developed at THQ's internal Digital Studios UK team, Kill Team is due on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in July. No word of a PC release, sorry.

Playing as one of four Space Marines classes--Sternguard Veteran, Techmarine, Vanguard Veteran or Librarian--players are sent to stop an Ork Kroozer from attacking a Forge World. It'll support two-player split-screen co-op, for you to bring a chapter buddy to the slaughter. Six different chapter skins are on offer, so you won't get stuck in a boring one like the Ultramarines. Ninja Gaiden 3 screens appear online

Ninja Gaiden 3 screens appear online

A handful of blood-soaked screens for Tecmo's upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3 have made their way online, courtesy of Famitsu.

Unlike the tame graphical nature of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2--which reduced the level of gore versus Ninja Gaiden 2's ultra-violent approach--Ninja Gaiden 3 seems to be back on the transfusion train.

According to Andriasang, Ryu will gain a number of new abilities throughout the adventure, including wall climbing. Also, Ryu's right arm will have a "central" role in the game. Other than that being his go-to sword swinging limb, the screens make it look like his arm is possessed or infected. Read more »

Age of Empires Online content pricing revealed

"Free-to-play" never means "completely free," and Age of Empires Online is no exception. Publisher Microsoft this week revealed the assorted content and bonuses that'll be on sale for the F2P online revival of the strategy series, along with its launch date.

Age of Empires Online will launch for PC on August 16 as a free download from the Games for Windows Marketplace, but will also available in a $19.99 boxed retail edition. The boxed version will contain the Greek 'Premium Civilization Pack,' which would otherwise cost $19.99 itself, along with an retail-exclusive item store and some trifling physical knick-knacks. Aliens: Colonial Marines due spring 2012

Aliens: Colonial Marines due spring 2012

Gearbox's much-anticipated co-op shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines largely dropped off the radar after it was announced in 2008, but the Borderlands developer has always insisted it was still on its way. Today, publisher Sega pulled back the curtain to reveal a new trailer, more details, a single screenshot, and a release window--spring 2012.

Described by the official site as "a true sequel to James Cameron's classic Aliens," Colonial marines promises drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to four players. Marines will venture into movie environments such as Hadley's Hope, the Sulaco and LV-426, armed with weapons including pulse rifles, motion trackers and flamethrowers on "self-contained missions within an over-arching narrative." Modern Warfare 3 First Look

Modern Warfare 3 First Look

If you've seen Modern Warfare 3 in action in the reveal trailer, then you probably have a sense of the downtown destruction feel the game is going for (who am I kidding? Many of you reading this have watched it many times looking for all the details on the game it may reveal). Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Call of Duty creator Infinity Ward, reinforced that intention in his introduction of the game to the press at the game's debut event. Urban combat taken to a whole new level of scale is part of what Bowling termed the very strong vision the team had for Modern Warfare 3. Then he turned the stage over to Glen Schofield, the studio head at developer Sledgehammer Games, who more or less ran the demo from there on out.

Torchlight 2 open 'Overworld' areas explained

Torchlight 2 open 'Overworld' areas explained

Every other week between now and E3 2011, developer Runic Games has pledged to share new bits of information for its upcoming sequel Torchlight 2. On Friday, the dev showed off a number of new screens and detailed the tech that powers the game's randomly generated areas.

According to the recent blog post from lead designer Patrick Blank, Torchlight 2 features two types of new outdoor areas: Passes and Overworld areas. Each section is substantially larger than even the biggest levels found in the original game and include "random dungeons, random events, and lots of exploration for players." On the blog, Blank reveals the largest area in Torchlight was made up of "6-7 chunks," whereas the first Overworld area in Torchlight 2 is made up of "18-23 chunks." Read more »

Arma 3 announced for 2012

Arma 3 announced for 2012

War is serious business, and it's nice to have Bohemia Interactive remind us of that. The Czech developer today announced a new entry in its realism-heavy battlefield simulation series Arma, for release on PC in summer 2012.

Arma 3 will take players to a sunny Mediterranean island, where apparently there's a "well-guarded military secret" to be seized. As well as an "open-ended and story-driven" single-player campaign, Arma 3 will offer co-op and competitive multiplayer modes. There'll also be the ubiquitous mission editor. Read more »

2D MOBA 'Awesomenauts' announced

"Russian monkeys with jetpacks, giant robots, and lots of other mighty aliens" are promised by today's announcement of Awesomenauts from Ronimo Games, the studio founded by de Blob's initial creators after they sold its rights to THQ. The downloadable title's gameplay sounds as unusual as its stylings--a sidescrolling MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or DotA game to you and me).
