Flower, flOw, Sound Shapes, and Escape Plan ported to PS4

Sony started building PlayStation's reputation as the go-to system for indie games with the likes of Flower and flOw, and it looks like PS4 will run away with oodles of indie exclusives, both actual exclusives and timed ones. It's not forgetting these old gems, though, today announcing that both those classics are coming to PS4, along with Escape Plan and Sound Shapes.

Sound Shapes expands with six free albums, two paid cars

Sound Shapes expands with six free albums, two paid cars

Queasy Games' music-platformer Sound Shapes is expanding quite a bit today. Two updates--one free and one paid--will introduce new albums and new gameplay elements into the PS Vita/PS3 cross-play game.

First up, a free title update will add "The Community Milkcrate" to the game. The Milkcrate adds six albums and 35 levels in the game, all hand-picked from the community. Each will come enhanced with liner notes and "interesting things to check out," like a director's commentary. These levels will become "baked" into the game, meaning you won't have to go out of your way to find them.

One of our favorite Vita games of the year is getting its first set of DLC today. Four add-ons for Sound Shapes will be available on the PlayStation Store later today, including one that will be completely free.

The "Curved Terrain Pack" is a free download, and it allows you to "bend, stretch, and shape curves" to add smooth surfaces to your user-created levels.

Sound Shapes review

Sound Shapes review

As a huge fan of music gaming, my enthusiasm for Sound Shapes was palpable. The latest game from Jonathan Mak, the man behind Everyday Shooter, this eccentric platformer promised to combine music creation with platforming to create a brand new experience. Not only would gamers be able to play interactive "albums" from Jim Guthrie, Deadmau5, and Beck, they'd be able to create their own as well.

In many ways, the vision has been successfully executed. Launching on Vita and PS3 last week, Sound Shapes offers one of the most inventive gaming experiences this year. However, a few issues keep it from reaching true greatness.

Sound Shapes' level editor showcased

Sound Shapes' level editor showcased

In one week's time, Sound Shapes will be available on PS3 and Vita. It's been one of our most anticipated games, largely thanks to its innovative music/level editor. The game will include a variety of sounds to work with from a number of high-profile artists, including deadmau5, Pyramid Attack, and Beck--and you'll be able to include them in your own user-created levels.

Designer Jonathan Mak shows off the level editor by creating a platforming stage that includes deadma5 loops with Superbrothers hazards. See exactly how it works in this brand new video.

The Last of Us wins Best of Show from E3 Game Critics

The Last of Us wins Best of Show from E3 Game Critics

Hyperviolence was all the rage at this year's E3. However, only one hyperviolent game could take the crown. The Game Critics Awards have finally been determined, and Naughty Dog has come on top with The Last of Us. Its strong performance pushed PS3 to the top of the heap, with PS3 as the most-winning platform. Sony Computer Entertainment is the most-winning publisher as well, with 7 awards.

Sound Shapes coming to Vita and PS3 on August 7

Sound Shapes coming to Vita and PS3 on August 7

Sound Shapes is pretty much the reason why Garnett and I have PS Vita systems. Everyday Shooter developer Jonathan Mak has teamed up with an indie dream team to make a music platforming game where every new level is a new musical experience. Excitingly, Sound Shapes allows players to play, create, and share their own levels with an intuitive level creator.

One of our most anticipated Vita games now has a release date: August 7th. However, Sony has also announced that it's no longer a Vita exclusive--it will be coming to PS3 on the same day.

Sound Shapes to feature exclusive tracks from Deadmau5

Sound Shapes to feature exclusive tracks from Deadmau5

One of Vita's big "system sellers" here at Shacknews is a game you might not have heard of. It's not an Uncharted game, or a Resistance game. No, Sound Shapes has commanded our attention since we got our hands on it at E3 earlier this year. This unique platformer from Everyday Shooter's Queasy Games also happens to be a music creation tool, and Canadian helmet-wearing music producer Deadmau5 is throwing a few of his own tunes into the game.
