While UMDs won't be able to make the leap into the NGP generation, PSP owners that own games available on the PlayStation Network will be able to take advantage of NGP's backwards compatibility support. A report on Eurogamer confirms that NGP will be able to play all PSP games currently available on the PlayStation Network.

Chrono Trigger (also known as one of the best games ever made) has been rated by the ESRB for the PS3 and PSP, Joystiq discovered earlier today.

[Update 4/21/11] Though the device is being discontinued in Japan and Europe, America apparently plugs onward. Joystiq reports that an SCEA spokesperson has said they are "continuing production of PSP Go for North America." So there you go.
[Original Story] Following yesterday's report, Sony has confirmed that it is ceasing production on the PSP Go to Japanese site AV Watch (via Kotaku). A spokesperson said the company is now focusing production on their next handheld, the NGP. Whatever stock remains of the PSP Go will be sold until it's depleted. Read more »

Sony may have halted production of the PSP Go, according to Andriasang. The site translates a Japanese blog from a Sony Shop employee, claiming the store won't be getting any more shipments because production is ceasing. Meanwhile, some models of the Go are at least temporarily out of stock in Japan and Europe, though it's still listed for sale in the North American Sony Store.
Stirring the pot further is a statement issued to Eurogamer, vaguely promising to continue to meet demand for the "current generation of PSPs." The company was mum on whether the PSP Go is being discontinued. Read more »

Perhaps related, Sony has announced it will cut the price of its PSP-3000 to $130. News of the $40 drop comes from the PlayStation Blog, which revealed so many other discounted items we're surprised the site didn't include video of Howard Stringer screaming "everything must go!" into a camera.
