PlayStation Plus will be required to play online multiplayer games on PlayStation 4. However, Sony says the cost will ultimately benefit the consumer.
"We decided that on PS4, because we want to continue to invest and improve our new services, we've asked the most engaged consumers in the online activities to share the burden with us so that we can continue to invest," Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said. Continuing the service for free on PS4 would put pressure on Sony to cut costs, and that would be at odds with the goal of providing "very robust and great online services going forward."

Unsurprisingly, PlayStation Plus is coming to PS4. Not only will memberships carry over from PS3 and Vita, but the well-regarded Instant Game Collection will be available at PS4's launch. On Sony's next-gen system, Plus will grant subscribers one free PS4 game each month. The first game set to be featured in this program will be a special PlayStation Plus edition of DriveClub. No details were revealed on what this version of the game will include or leave out.

PlayStation Plus membership is already a pretty redonculous bargain, given how many free games it gets you for PS3 and Vita, but Sony has sweetened the deal further. For the next few months, buying a year's PS Plus membership will get you a bonus three months. That's three extra months of free games, discounts, and wondering why Xbox Live is still so expensive.
