Oh, how wonderful and exciting X Rebirth looked in the run-up to release, but oh, how harsh and unforgiving is the cold light of reality. The space sim is more than a mite wonky in its current state, but developer Egosoft has plans to fix it up, and detailed them in a new dev update.

X Rebirth wowed us last month with a trailer on the space sim's scale and depth, and now is impressing with intricate detail. A new trailer devotes ten minutes to how trading and mining work in a galaxy where NPC ships tie into the economy and you can control your own fleet and facilities.

X Rebirth blasting off into absurdly detailed space on November 19

X Rebirth may be arriving two years later than planned but oh me oh my it certainly has used that extra time well. Developer Egosoft has announced its latest sandbox space sim will launch on November 19, and dropped a hot trailer showing the sim is so detailed, you can get out your ship and crawl around ducts on space stations.

X3: Albion Prelude announced, coming Dec. 15

Developer Egosoft has announced X3: Albion Prelude, a new add-on that promises to bridge the gap between 08/09's X3: Terran Conflict and the upcoming X Rebirth.

The X3: Terran Conflict add-on is planned to launch on December 15 for the PC and Mac and boasts an "improved user interface" and "more than 30 new ships and stations." X3: Albion Prelude also features a Stock Exchange feature, allowing players to speculate and play local markets to increase their wealth.

X Rebirth continues the longstanding Egosoft-developed space series later this year

Publisher Deep Silver has announced a new game in the X Universe is currently in development from series creator Egosoft, entitled X Rebirth. In the announcement press release, Deep Silver notes that the return of the space trading and combat simulator franchise will bring "radically new game design and top notch graphics" to the series.

The first game in the series since X3: Terran Conflict launched in 2008, Deep Silver says that X Rebirth is "more than just an additional chapter"; it is a "fresh beginning" for the series with a number of innovations that will not compromise the franchise's origins. Read more »

DRM Issues Spoil Steam Holiday Sale

Some of those that recently bought GSC Game World's S.TA.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and Egosoft's X3: Terran Conflict were temporarily unable to activate and play those games, due to reportedly resolved problems with the TAGES-run authentication servers.

Both games utilize TAGES DRM to enforce a 5-machine activation limit, and received a resurgence of attention as they were featured in the Steam Holiday Sale. The promotion saw 10-75% discounts on games sold via the PC digital distribution service. Read more »
