My point was for many real world projects the cost of development is often the limiting factor not performance. So you develop as much as you can as fast as you can and you pick a language that lets you do that (for some that will be Java). If you need some extra performance you get a bigger hammer (for some that'll be Java). If you need the biggest damn hammer possible and that is priority #1 (like people do for games and other every cycle counts domains), you're not likely to pick Java.
