Ruby excels at Web, automation, system administration/configuration, and the like. Where it's really really weak is anything needing a native UI (which would include many general purpose things). People are working on that but it's just not there. Making daemons in it is dead simple (and can be rather fast using something like EventMachine), but in many cases other languages may be the better tool if you can swing it.
In the Ruby world it seems that speed of development is king and if it turns out you have special needs you break out into something else and address the problem (scala, erlang, C++, Java, whatever).
