Classic Mode: Game mode with instant building and infinite access to building materials. Both SP and MP modes are available. A map is procedurally generated, and you can build, destroy, and change the world as you (or as others on an MP server) see fit. No monsters, no RPG elements, and the point is to build or explore to your desire.
Survival Mode: Game mode with finite access to building and crafting materials. Materials are harvested through gathering (with or without tools), smelting or crafting new resources, or through looting fallen monsters. An extensive, and growing, crafting and engineering system allows complicated logic circuits, traps, armor, tools, decorations, and stuff like ladders and signs (which display real-world text! wooot!); the harvesting-mining-smelting-crafting system (easier just to call it engineering stuff) is one of the main draws of this mode. The insertion of monsters also adds a suspense and cautionary component.
