Without one lick of work, you could simply tell your compiler "Target Pentium 4 and newer, assume SSE2 support" and the stock Microsoft compiler would happily turn your code into single-threaded, scalar-form non-aligned SSE instructions which would still issue faster and pipeline better than the x87 stack-based FPU instructions.
