I understand what you're saying, but I think you're glossing over the importance of continued practice.
The problem is that these higher level concepts really, really depend on the repetitive grunt work. If you don't take the time to ingrain the lower level material, you won't have the proper outlook when you reach higher level concepts. Trudging through the lower level material sucks, but it's work that must be done. I think it could definitely be presented better, and integrated into a more lively curriculum. But it's not something we can just 'skip'.
