A properly implemented widescreen will be aware of the 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio and widen the field-of-view appropriately. That gives you several (10-20 degress) more view arc without distortion of the view of the world.
In contrast, the method used in BioShock (as well as in the original release of STALKER) acts as if the 16:9 or 16:10 screen is just the center of a larger 4:3 screen. Since the top and bottom doesn't fit on the widescreen monitor, they get cut off.
