King's Quest hat passed on in The Game Awards trailer

The premiere trailer for the New King's Quest was revealed at The Video Game Awards 2015. The legend returns!

13

Legendary game designers Ken and Roberta Williams may have been out of the game development industry for a long time, but their legacy lives on. A new King's Quest game is in the works, developed by The Odd Gentleman and published by Sierra, the new King's Quest "reimagines the humor, puzzles, exploration and sense of wonder" that the original franchise brought over thirty years ago.

The original hero of the King's Quest games, King Graham, is now an old man, and he shares the extraordinary stories of his youth with his curious granddaughter, Gwendolyn. Check out the trailer for more info.

Kings Quest is expected to release in the Fall of 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.

The art style is hideous. It's like Borderlands but done incompetently.

It doesn't fit King's Quest at all. I really don't know what the point of using this brand is. PS3 and PS4 owners have no idea about the history of these games.

Plenty of us here own both of those consoles and are in our early to late 30's.

You really think that most console owners played the original King's Quest games? Give me a break.

I know loads of older console gamers, as in mid 30s to mid/late 40s.

Yes, they know the KQ games because they actually played them on the Apple II, Macintosh, MS-DOS, etc way back in the day.

we should have a poll. With self selection bias because everyone who played them would be sure to vote (hi)

I disagree with your last statement but I'm kind of with you on the art style.

They need to figure out how to do something like this

THAT would be an amazing art style for a new KK.

Agreed. One of the most charming things about those games looking back is how unstylised they are. There is a freshness to seeing something that hasn't been over designed.

So many games do this these days to cover up for terrible art.

The art style is indeed terrible. Doesn't seem to fit in with any of the previous KQ(s) styles, even the unmentionable Mask of Eternity <shutter>

And those action-seeming sections just turn me off completely. I get that they're designing this firmly with playing with a controller in mind, but that's not an excuse about why they need action sections.

reminds me a little too much of Dragon's Lair

I feel like they're taking inspiration from 80s animation, mostly Don Bluth and stuff like The Last Unicorn by Rankin and Bass. Don Bluth worked on Dragon's Lair so the resemblance isn't surprising.

Right. It looks like misremembered King's Quest being Dragon's Lair. The game was about puzzles and story, not jumping and ducking.

It looks like a trailer meant to raise interest and generate hype, not show gameplay.

King's Quest as a jump and run? Oh come on... More like Moneygrab Quest

I would wager that they're choosing to show scenes of action over puzzles and dialog because, to be honest, a trailer of "TALK TO DRAGON" and "USE STICK WITH GOBLIN" wouldn't be interesting or exciting to any casual viewer.

I have the feeling that the new King's Quest is going to be closer to something like Limbo or The Cave. A 2D puzzle platformer. That's not really what I want from a new King's Quest but it still sounds better than the last game and we already have the original game and a remake of it anyway so I don't think ANOTHER point and click version of that story would be that great anyway.

Thanks for posting this. I take back some of my earlier comment. I see where they're going with the art direction. It's meant to feel like a storybook I think. It works in outdoor sections and on the main character. It doesn't work on the dragon and the little guy.
