Battlefield 4 'player appreciation' will offer double XP

Battlefield game launches are almost guaranteed to fumble out of the gate. DICE's Karl Magnus Troedsson is apologizing for the unstable online performance of Battlefield 4, acknowledged that some platforms have "had more than their fair share of issues." He promises that the team is currently focused on fixing the game, which launched on Xbox One today.

"Resolving the launch issues is our #1 priority. In fact, we are so serious that we have the entire team working to stabilize the game and we will not move on to other projects until we are sure that Battlefield 4 meets--and exceeds--your expectations. It is the right thing to do."

You can keep track of all the updates here.

A player "appreciation" event will span from November 28th through December 5th, which will reward all players with double XP in multiplayer. The reasoning behind this is that "launch issues may have impacted your progression." In addition, all players that log in on December 5th will get a M1911 pistol scope. Previously reserved for DICE developers, it has a 3x zoom and is available for all classes.

yeah, I just meant DICE specifically has a history of shipping games with pretty serious bugs and stability issues. They either don't know how to handle the QA process (unlikely) or don't care because people keep buying the games. I mean, how do you ship a shooter with a persistent bug that causes friends/foes to be misidentified when you hover your reticle over them and then not fix it for ages? Crashes are nothing new for them on PC but now they're even bringing that experience to consoles from what I see. I want to try the game as a graphical showpiece (and I know I like BF style MP) but I don't really feel like supporting it right now.

            It's just ridiculous now.

            BF4
4 Class Kit gadget unlock paths
            10 Weapon specific unlock paths
            8 Vehicle specific unlock paths
= 22 separate xp systems to level with unlocks to get.

            BF3
            4 Class Kit unlock paths
1 All Class General Weapon unlock tree
            1 Specialization unlock tree
            8 Vehicle specific unlock paths
= 14, but only the vehicles and classes are separate. You still get the general weapons and specializations by playing the game and getting points with any class and while doing anything.

In BF4, most weapons now work like vehicles in that you only get points when you are actively using them, aside from the class gadgets and the initial common weapons other classes can equip. So you can only get more Assault Rifles, Shotguns, LMGs, Pistols, Grenades, Knives, Sniper Rifles, DMRs, and Carbines from hits, assists, and kills with those specific weapon types. In BF3 you could unlock all of the weapons for your main class and then some by being a team player, capturing flags, earning squad points, repairs, heals, support, anything. BF4, none of that will aid your unlocking of weapons, you have to fire and shoot your weapon and be effective with it consistently or that's all you'll ever have.

            November 22, 2013 7:08 PM

I think it's a better solution than just earning random unlocks as you level up your overall rank. Like shotguns? Fantastic, go level up your shotguns and unlock more in he process! This theoretically makes it easier to get the best gun for any given gun class, as long as you stick to that class.

            • reply
              November 22, 2013 7:28 PM

It could be better if you earned points for those weapon types you have equipped beyond just getting hits / assists / kills with them. In theory it makes sense, in practice it sucks. Especially if you want different guns later in the different trees and use gadgets (like rocket launchers, c4, repair tools, med kits, ammo supply etc) or vehicles to help your team out as much of or more than your normal guns. Then it's just a chore. If you only ever use shotguns and ignore all other venues on your way to unlock more shotguns, sure. That's cool. It'll still take you a while to unlock them all but you'll eventually get there.

              It's obscene now. http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=31123717#item_31123717

There's a bunch different weapon trees (different from the class kit trees) and all of them (except grenades from what I can tell) take a loooong time to unlock if you aren't firing your weapon and hitting stuff constantly. Because it's such a grind and that's all you can do. You don't get points toward gun unlocks by helping your team out in many different ways like you did in previous games. You only get them if you shoot your gun and kill with your gun. A lot. You are rewarded far less for being a versatile team player, which is really why I think it's shit.

It'd be nice to get that M1911 by repairing tanks and blowing up others with my RPG like I could with other various weapons in BF3. Instead I have to ignore everything else and hunt down idiots with my other pistols to the detriment of my fun, my other weapon unlocks, and teamwork in general if I really want to use that stupid scope they're giving out free sometime within the next few months. It's bullshit. I think you're crazy if you prefer that setup, but whatever. More power to ya.

                November 22, 2013 8:27 PM

And I personally felt the old method encouraged way more experimentation and teamwork. Playing as the assault class, you were rewarded with new assault rifles by doing all things assault related, not just firing and hitting enemies with assault rifles. You could heal and revive, capture and defend flags, you could be the best fucking medic, turn your teammates into terminators, top the leaderboards with barely any kills and those points would still go toward unlocking more assault rifles in a timely fashion. What's so bad about that? Now, the all important team based class performance stuff has no bearing on unlocking more assault rifles.

Same goes for overall performance and experimenting. Maybe you'd rank up and get a new shotgun or pistol or PDW or something else you wouldn't normally use as any class and equip that and try it out. Sometimes you'd find something awesome or it would change your style of play for certain maps and perhaps even become your new standard. That was great. That was fun. Now, you can pretty much only strive more of the same all the time as far as main weapons weapons go, and class, squad, and general point performance has no bearing on that anymore with the main weapon types. Kills and assists are obviously important, too, but there's a lot more to the game than that stuff outside of TDM.

This whole system isn't going to change but they could at least drop the requirements for the weapon trees. Shit. 57,000 pistol points are needed the final pistol unlock, I have 3k, felt like I've used the starting pistol a decent amount, and constantly use the xp boosts when I have them. 50 hours played and the only pistols I have is the one I started with and the one from the single player.

Blah. I don't know why I bother ranting about it to myself. No one cares. People are even in support of it! I can totally see the grind going from bad to worse in future games, and then they'll start selling stuff like XP Boosts and Battlepacks on the store to make it all better. D:

Also on top of the weapon unlock trees you have assignments/missions you need to complete to unlock some items as well. The game has lot of grind designed in to it.

as awesome as it is they're doing this (they don't have to)...double xp will just cause you to level up way too fast imo. i am only rank 31 and i feel like i have unlocked the majority of the "good" weapons for the game....hopefully the expansions will add enough "unlockables" to keep some progression other than completionism.

i think the time played to the speed at which a player unlocks things is very quick on its own....multiple days of double xp makes that even faster. not to mention the number of XP boosters you get in battlepacks. i am glad i have cool shit to play with...just feel like it is a bit too fast considering how long the game has been released.

and the crashing is certainly irritating. for me the game will stop accepting input and it behaves like i have the keys continuously pressed. i'll go end process/task in task manager and it doesn't release the memory...performance tab will still show 6gb~ or whatever still in use without any PID's to go with it.

I can stand unlocks in different games because their gameplay and gunplay are different. Even titles in the same franchise can meet this criteria.

BF, for example, has historically had noticeable deviations, refinements, between titles. From BC1>BC2 >BF3 the core gameplay and weapon behaviors were quite different.

However, weapons in BF4 are basically the same as those in BF3. There's no 'learning curve' in terms of gunplay. So, to me, it feels like I've been demoted to private and can't select which weapons I bring to a fight.
