Deep Down is free-to-play on PS4

Capcom has announced that its upcoming online dungeon crawler will be free-to-play on PS4.

Deep Down made quite a first impression when it debuted at Sony's PS4 reveal event. And while it may have AAA production values and pretty next-gen visuals, Capcom has announced that its upcoming online dungeon crawler will also be free-to-play.

The free-to-play business model isn't entirely surprising, given that the game is coming from Capcom's Online Games division and may be online-only.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida says that an open beta will be available near the Japanese launch of PS4 next February.

Well, if Sony can make PlanetSide 2 fantastic, I think Capcom may be okay. If I was to choose a company to screw up with F2P it would have been Sony. If I do and but enjoy it a lot, I would probably limit myself to $60 total over some x amount of time.

Dunno how I feel about this... f2p is hard to get right and it's Capcom we're talking about here. This also means the design of the game is probably some sort of instanced multiplayer affair (like Warframe?) which is far less intriguing than what I had in mind - was hoping for something more like Dragon's Dogma but I guess I'll have to wait for the real sequel to that :(

I'm trying to give it the benefit of the doubt and of course I'll try it along with everyone else, but yeah... kinda disappointed.

Jesus H. Christ; literally every new bit of news makes this thing sound like a pile of garbage. Just make the F'ing game shown at the unveiling and you'd have me.

Better be able to buy all the content outright for $60. Haaaate that model.

They're spending millions on this game and it's going to be F2P. Do they really think they're going to hook enough "whales" to recoup that cost?

I just don't understand what they are trying to do with this game. The future thing, the music that doesn't match the style...it's all so very Japanese and non-sensical to my western eyes.

I'm still a little bitter that it isn't the Dragon's Dogma successor I was hoping for. On the plus side, at least this free to play thing means I'll definitely give it a chance. Judging from the gameplay videos there's still a chance it could end up being interesting.

After seeing what seems to be slower comabt, I'm a little relieve it isn't Dragon's Dogma 2. I really want a full sequel though, such a great game.

I don't necessarily see the problem - the only 2 F2P games that I play are awesome (PS2 and PoE).

Not only is it not a problem, but a really smart idea on Sony's part. Having a bunch of games that any new PS4 owner can download and play immediately is a huge boon in an age when consoles no longer come with pack-in games.

It actually is really smart, even if the game turns out to not be that great. It'll definitely please a lot of parents that they don't necessarily need to buy games on day one.

Interesting. I'm not exactly sure what to think about this, but it still doesn't stop me from being excited about this game. I'm still very curious. Also... I've kind of gotten over the F2P hatred I once had, MWO has squeezed that out of me I guess.

My response is the same as most, looks cool but free to play has to be done right and capcom might just make us pay to resurrect each time.
But I have played Pathofexile so I know free to play can work, a good diablo II style game with cosmetic purchases I've spent over 100 gbp .
