Nintendo revises Wii U sales expectations downwards
by Andrew Yoon, Jan 30, 2013 2:00pm PSTNintendo expects to sell 4 million Wii U consoles by the end of its fiscal year on March 31st. While that's an impressive figure, it's down from an initial projection of 5.5 million due to "lower-than-expected sales."
According to new data [PDF] released by the company, 3.06 million units of Nintendo's new home console have been shipped worldwide so far. The most popular games are unsurprisingly New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land, both which have sold more than two million units each. (In fact, with 11.69 million units of Wii U software sold so far, these two first-party titles represent a whopping 37 percent of total software sales so far!)
Part of the sluggish momentum for Wii U could be blamed on lackluster post-launch software support. Nintendo has publicly apologized for the sparse amount of recent releases, but promises that new Mario and Zelda games are on the way.
