by Andrew Yoon, Aug 04, 2011 6:00pm PDTThe response to Bethesda's Brink has been mixed, with passionate reactions for and against the game. Starting right now, you'll be able to decide for yourself, as Brink will be free to play this weekend on Steam. The entire game will be available free to play until Sunday, August 7th, at 1PM Pacific.
Now is a particularly good time to jump on the bandwagon, if you decide you like the game. Not only is the game on sale, but the first DLC pack-- --is available for free, for a limited time only.

Movement is a bit frustratingly slow, especially if you hit the bug where you wind up with heavy movement while playing as a normal build. Seem to be some glitches with adjusting your character.
I wish they handled unlocks/multiple characters a bit differently. Having to start over to tinker with a voice choice you discover later annoys you is irritating. (Voice actor credit is nice there, but not terribly useful for picking a voice.)
Seem to be an awful lot of bugs, winning a mission (prevent agent from escaping) and... enemy wins anyways because agent escaped? Uh...
And then there's my characters lips, which randomly botox up and then shrink to slits. Happens on others ingame, but most noticable during appearance adjustment during breathe animations. Some kind of weird geometry LOD glitch?
I'm hearing weird rumors about co-op not being possible if the host is higher rank than you. If you are playing with a friend who has firewall trouble, and use wrong character, you can't host for him until he catches up separately? But if he doesn't have firewall trouble, he could host?
Also, given game seems to award individual XP, if you are better at headshots or he plays in a way the XP system doesn't reward, you could outstrip him and not be able to host? Argh.
There's some things that are really nice about it, I love the realism/cartoon caricature style, even if the results are a bit disturbing on some of the faces. Feel of many of the automatic weapons is nice; accuracy/stability tradeoffs are particularly interesting. Unfortunately, tradeoffs seem to make a fair number of the weapons rather weak compared to the better ones.
