Morning Discussion

This Friday is brought to you by the only reason I can sleep worth a jot nowadays--the BBC Radio 4 shipping forecast, thanks to looped repeats on Permanent Bedtime. If you want the latest Shipping Forecast news, though, the brilliant podcast Shift Run Stop has Forecast veteran Zeb Soanes on its latest episode. Splendid.

So, finally got in some BC2 time yesterday.

Very much fun, but what the hell is up with the amount of snipers? During the 3-4 hours I played more than half the games practically consisted of something like 50-70% snipers. Is this normal in BF games, does it get better with time? I haven't played any of them for more than a few moments since 1942 but I don't remember it being quite like this.

Other than dying all the time from a single shot, very much fun. Might actually be the first online FPS I end up playing for more than a few hours since TF2.

Why'd they have to put MMO-style grinding in regular games? That economy/work-to-pay-for-fun crap doesn't belong outside of MMO's.

if you're playing on a pubby, it's mainly because everyone's brought up to think snipers are bad azzzzz and they're all lone wolves, picking their prey and shooting them from a distance.

When in fact most of them are shit and aren't doing what a recon should be doing.

On Panama Canal, I ran into one of the big warehouses along the causeway and right into a squad of 5 or 6 medics.

I shot 1 or 2 in the face and then danced around the remaining guys for about 10-15 seconds before finally getting dropped. I think I got at least 1 knife kill...

I play Recon a lot but I'm good at it, put red dot on my rifle for close range combat, C4 the shit out of enemy armor and spot the shit out of enemy soldiers.

(I also blow up JonathanParkerBedrava 's helicopter and snipe him out of the air)

Spotting is one of, if not the most, important team-support mechanism.

          March 5, 2010 6:37 AM

then again, those two-shot-kill sniper rifles that require you to take a pistol shot or two after hitting a target now do more damage, so you can use a faster-firing rifle with any decent scope and be one-shotting everybody.

        • reply
          March 5, 2010 6:48 AM

I think hardcore makes recon/snipers even deadlier. frankly, most people play recon as a pure sniper and dont use the full potential of the class. my experience with HC has been a higher percentage of snipers over normal mode, and they can all kill you in one shot. I dont think that rush and conquest are suited well for hardcore, squad TDM seems to be the only mode that you could play HC and actually have fun.

Once again if you are going to play Assault: Pay attention to those little ammo icons around the battlefield people are asking for for ammo. Know that if you see a guy with a rocket launcher on has back (engineer) hes going to need ammo he can only hold 3+rockets (or more with perk) so many times i run out of rockets and have to scour for ammo packs.

Same with medic: toss out medkits.

      • reply
        March 5, 2010 7:32 AM

Yeah people seem to forget when playing assault that they can toss ammo. Very very helpful to have someone as assault in your squad though, I find I need ammo the most when I'm engineer and recon (for sensor balls and rockets), and it's really really important to be able to keep using both of those items.

dude, it's not THAT helpful. they build perfect spots to snipe for every stage of every map, so 90% of the time you already know that's where you got shot from. However, for newer players, getting some hint as to where they were killed from is SUPER helpful.

No one should NEED the Kill Cam off.

I'm still wanting to remove it. LOIOSH IS SNIPER FRIENDLY.

We'll do it when we get our first hardcore server.

what does Killcam do to prevent sniping? absolutely nothing. the majority of people you snipe aren't even going to be telling other people where you are. regardless, in the worst case scenario that you have some amazing sniper spot that no one ever checks, if you get spotted on the killcam then you have to move or maybe (horror of horrors) die once and lose a little K:D ratio.

Do this, but when you kill one of them, turn around and aim upwards...completely throws them off if they are trying to judge where you are by your position and orientation.

Why doesn't dice just limit the number of snipers that can be on a team? Obviously their other attempts at fixing these kinds of issues has not worked.

Because Recon does far more than just snipe. A shotgun+C4 Recon build is surprisingly effective.

Shotgun and 6 C4's can wreck a base real quick....i havne't been playing recon as much as i did in the beta because of how many people are already on it. Plus, a lot of these maps aren't good for sniping, so its rough trying to build ranks.

You can use shotgun+c4 with Assault. The only unique aspects of Recon are sniper rifles and the motion sensor. I could live with a 2-3 Recon limit per side.

look, this was PREDICTABLE. huge maps, mortar ability, and the ability to actually camp out and snipe.

since recon can do everything and there's no need for any other class, that's a design flaw. between C4 and mortaring, you throw on the extra ammo perk and you can snipe for a REALLY long time.

I'll be playing MW2 in a duet with BC2 , I like both playstyles and they are very different. plus I gotta drive some mother fucking tanks ya know bro.

As much as I hate snipers, they seem fairly easy to avoid. Despite the fact that you can blow up just about anything, there seems to be a lot more cover than previous Battlefield games. It's not too hard to work your way from cover to cover and either get out of their line of sight or just go around them and get them from behind.

1 per life. That almost seems too much. Almost wish there was a set timer regardless of deaths.

I enjoy the recon class. However, part of me thinks the game will be better served with this class, and all the sniping rifles removed. Or at least have a game mode where these are disabled.

Honestly, being team oriented isn't a game mechanic, it's something you do or you don't. It is however something certain games will benefit from, like this one or say CS or TF2 etc etc. But like all those games I rarely find team work existent on pubs.

As far as playing our own games, of course we do. Probably more so than people realize.

I don't agree. Valve has proved that you can at least funnel people towards playing as a team through game design. In L4D, you aren't going to survive very long at all if you run off by yourself and you aren't going to live long enough to have much fun doing this either. In Battlefield games, many people (including myself from time to time) will just go solo and do our own thing for the entire match. It's possible to go a full 20 minutes without doing anything to assist the team and still have fun and suffer no punishment. There is enough gratification to be had through simply getting kills, not being killed, and leveling up, that ensuring that your team wins is only one of the myriad things to do and unless the rest of your team participates it's hard to motivate yourself to contribute as well.

I would like them to design their games in such a way that rewards team play and deemphasizes leveling up and getting kills.

Recons really need to stick in a squad. It isn't fair to deprive a squad that needs a medic or engy for useless stat padding. In beta, I loved playing recon with a shogun and had tons of fun with it, now with 90% of recon players playing sniper it is truly aggravating to play with and against them.
