Weekend Discussion

By Chris Faylor, May 16, 2009 8:00am PDT All I want to do this weekend is see Star Trek. Anything else is secondary. The hype is overwhelming, and I feel like some sort of nerdy traitor for not having seen it yet.

mancide has asked me to point out his shackstats site, which lets you see how your post count, LOLs and/or Xbox/Windows Live Gamerscore ranks relative to everyone else around here. Make sure your Gamertag is in your profile, else you look like a scrub.

My little brother also passes along word that his short film "Danny and the Page" has again progressed in Rooftop's National College Funny Film Competition. Only the four highest-voted videos will progress to the final round in Aspen--think he's got a shot?

  • Hey Shack!

So I just got back from a week long trip to Clearwater Beach in Florida. Friend's family owns a condo, so we got to stay for free for the week. The condo is right on the shore, so I could wake up and walk right into the ocean. It was kind of a touristy area, but I didn't mind too much for the week.

We drove from Ontario to Florida non-stop on the way there. Took 24 hours. Was probably one of the most painful experiences of my life. Next time, we are shelling out the extra cash to fly.

Also, I've decided that this coming winter will be the last one I spend in Canada. After that, I will spend my winters some place warm, preferably near the ocean. I don't know how I will accomplish this or what beach I plan to stay at, but at the very least I can work from home (web programming), so location isn't really a big deal for me.

In that vein, what are some good, warm beaches to live near? Preferably something authentic with locals and nothing that's too much of a tourist trap. Also, preferably, inexpensive.
