Weekend Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Apr 18, 2009 6:43am PDTI've only got two episodes left before I finish The Wire. I don't want it to end. It's to the point where I find myself intentionally delaying my viewings, much as I'll hold off on beating a game I really love, such as Ico, just to make it last as long as possible.
By the way, I'm sad to report that Ohio State managed to top my brother's team in the first round of online voting for the National College Comedy Competition. But there's good news, as Reid's short film is still in the running. If you like it, maybe vote?
Either way, you folks have yourselves a nice weekend. You've earned it, you know.
Xbox One not backwards compatible with 360 games
Xbox One doesn't require always-on connection
Call of Duty: Ghosts preview: rebooting a franchise
Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC exclusive to Xbox One first
Microsoft joins with Spielberg for live action Halo TV series

Despite a retarded demo I'm glad I bought this, it's awesome! The fact I'm playing it on my PC with the graphics cranked is especially nice. More of these JRPGs need to come to the PC, there's a whole market not being served here.
The battle system took some getting used to but I "get it" now. You give general orders to your troops rather than micro managing everything they do, yet it's still more control than the older Star Oceans gave you. It's a great approach to games like these and I'd like to see more of it.
Anyone else pick this up on Steam?

Last December a freeware game called Spelunky was released by Derek Yu of TIGSource. I downloaded it and played a few times but didn't get into it as I was busy with other things. This weekend I downloaded an updated version of the game and started playing again.
Spelunky is a 2d platformer where you play as a Indiana Jones type explorer. Your goal is to exit each level while collecting as much treasure as possible. This sounds somewhat generic, and it would be if the game was simply a set of levels. Instead, Spelunky takes a hint from Nethack and other roguelikes and randomly generates levels each time you play. There are no saves so once you die you lose all your items and money and start from the beginning.

In the market for a new computer, and seriously considering a Mac. Specifically, a refurb 3.06ghz iMac. I'd been spec'ing out a i7 monster, but then I realized I just don't game that much. Are there any decent games coming out anytime soon that would make me regret this? The only one that comes to mind is Starcraft 2, and I don't think that is super performance sensitive.
Having used OS X for the past 2 or 3 weeks I've grown to like it. Applications tend to be more usable and focused than their Windows equivalents, who are always bugging you to install crappy toolbars, put three tray icons up, and begging you to autoupdate them. And Windows apps are always ugly because some idiot decides their program is too important to use standard widgets. I'm not even a huge fan of Aqua, but it is at least kept minimalist and consistent, though I know Apple's trying to move to one look for all their apps.
I'm really looking to use my computer for audio type stuff - making songs, recording, etc - rather than gaming. So, tell me Shack: is this just a case of the grass being greener on the other side? Has anyone switched and regretted it?

There was no silent countdown after Larry Moss died. Doesn't that usually mean the person is still alive? Maybe when Tony put his hand over Larry's mouth, he wasn't suffocating him, but maybe forcing him to swallow some knock-out pill?

Today's method was to put a jerk seasoning on them (http://www.sweatnspice.com/682-46.htm) 3 days prior. Now I applied BBQ and am slow cooking at low temp (220 @ 4.5 hours) Results shared in 2 more hours.

We canceled all but Internet Access and Netflix a few months ago to save about $130 on monthly expenses. So far? Success! Details in the reply.

i'm in love with this watch, but the $20K price tag is just a little out of reach... any of you know of any alternatives that look like this but cost under $500?

So, I recently started doing trapeze on Saturday mornings, and it turns out that my upper body strength is shit.
I'd like to get one of those pull up bars for my house. Something sturdy that won't fuck up my door frame.
Any recommendations of a bar that's good, and not too expensive?
Thanks!

Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, Iggy Pop, Willem Defoe and Traci Lords in the same movie. And Hatchet-Face, of course.

Scroll down and you'll see a comment about the map in the background from that Scout update. Was there any talk about this map when the picture was revealed? Or is it just some custom map that Valve just stuck in there

http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/04/surgeryvids.html
Later last night, after watching an episode of House, I thought "oh hey, I never checked out those surgery vids". Normally I'm not a terribly squeamish person - When I used to watch Nip/Tuck, I didn't even bat an eye at the surgery scenes. In fact, I watched the first 3 videos in the above link w/o any drama at all.
But man oh man, when I got to the 4th one (the sex change one) I got about halfway through and started feeling really light-headed. I knew what was going to happen, because I've passed out before. And sure enough, several minutes later I wake up in my chair, my entire body was rigid as if I was trying to flex ever single muscle at once. I felt weak and it took me a couple minutes to get up. I checked myself in the mirror and all the color was gone from my face.
tl;dr I fucking fainted watching someone get their gonads chopped up.

I don't see this talked about much. Is there some decent hard-drive backup software out there? Maybe one that's free? Minimal feature set: backup to a network drive, incremental backups, automatic backups, can specify directories to be included/excluded, works on Windows XP.
Any recommendations?

A week or two ago I was bitching about the awful progress display in when encoding files but when people said they didn't see the same I double-checked and no longer saw it either. I assumed it was fixed in a newer version.
Turns out I was confused. A couple of days ago I added some CDs to my iPod for the first time in ages and saw that the badness is still there. It happens when transferring files, not encoding them like I thought. (I hate iTunes and only use it to get stuff on my iPod so my memory of it is vague.)
I made a video to show what I mean, since when I was ranting people didn't seem to know what I was talking about (maybe because the Mac version doesn't do this?).

Before anyone jumps on me with the usual blind hatred dog-piling of anyone complaining about anything (especially god forbid something Apple made), no it is not the worst thing in the world. No, Apple didn't rape my pets. No, it does not affect me on a daily basis. But it is annoying when you're transferring a lot of data and you want to glance at the window to see the progress but cannot because that obnoxious "Do not disconnect" message is there instead 50% of the time. And it would be incredibly easy to do better.

I've been working on this 3d model off and on for a while. I finally finished the modeling and just need to add some decals. Eventually it's gonna have a bunch of spin arounds and zooms for a flash demo. It's some kind of medical pump.

On the rare occasion, my display will be flooded completely in a hue of green. Other times, it flickers like that, static lines cut across, and just plain out acts weird. It'll do this for a few seconds before returning to normal. Sometimes it reoccurs more often then others. I can go weeks without this happening.
The only solution I've found is to either wiggle the DVI cable at the video card or switch DVI ports on the video card (I really don't even know if this is helping anyways).
Shitty explanation, but I don't know how else to describe it. Anyways, anyone have any ideas?

So, my PC died, and i don't have the money to build a decent machine right now. Lately, i've been seeing netbooks on Passwird/woot/etc. for under $200.
Do any of you guys have one of these? How are they?
I'm looking for a cheap replacement to my PC, that i can browse and email on. Very basic stuff. When i get the money together, i'd like to building a decent machine again, but that might not be for a while. I'd rather buy something cheap in the meantime, rather than settling for a crappy system.
What's the concensus on these? I'm pretty much looking for as cheap as i can get. Any brands to avoid? I will probably just end up looking at the deal sites, and grabbing one the next time a cheap one pops up.
