Morning Discussion

Howdy Shackers. So there was quite the hubbub yesterday with the release of the Duke Nukem Forever teaser. It was Duke, and it did tease so I think we can call it a win. In news for the older gamers in the house, we have info on the new Blood Bowl, if that name or Mutant League bring a smile to your face then give it a look.

Did someone say Shack holiday contest? Yeah, I'll have something for you a bit later, I think it might excite a person or two.

So I'm looking at laptops, is it worth $150 to go from a CCFL to a LED screen? The site says it's 35% brighter and about 1/3lb lighter (4.30lbs -> 3.97). I'm looking at the dell xps m1330 btw, because it is both small, light and gameable but I'm open to other suggestions.

Its always worth a small amount of money to go brighter and lighter with a laptop

Yeah, I haven't really seen anything this side of apple in terms of it's quality. Thanks for the link, it makes me realize the academic pricing is actually worthwhile, something like 800 off a $2300 build with another $280 in dell gift cards.

unless you get them *right* when they come out (Esp Desktops the since the Intel move). Unfortunately they're all super high end so you have to be willing to pay a lot for said bang. =(

To be fair, I have been considering an iphone, and I do realize the two go together like peas and rice. After doing so much computing support, I really really appreciate an elegant system that works cooperatively together and apple really has that now (if you buy all the pieces).

And it's all moot until they make a 13.3" macbook pro or a macbook non-pro that can game. 15" laptops are just too big.

lol why would you interject in a conversation where someone is talking about buying one product to tell them to spend more money and get a completely different product?

I want to buy a Honda..

No one is suggesting an XBox in here, or a DS (Cause it's small, lightweight and game-able amirite?), just another computer that is perfectly capable of running Vista, XP, and OSX as well while fitting his criteria (though the MBP may be a little heavy at the moment for his taste). I don't see the issue here...

and this isn't apple hate, I love ipods and want an iphone (maybe 3rd gen, once batteries arent silly short)

Yeah, I've got the time but I don't want a Macbook Pro. Among other things, I walk 2 miles back and forth to work everyday and so any excess weight is unwelcome. If apple makes a Macbook (non-pro) w/ a real GPU then toot toot all aboard the apple love train but until then no time for it dr jones.

well, the MBP is only around 5 pounds.. (i know, a little too heavy for you according to your above posts) but the thing is, it's rumored they're going to have an ultra-portable MBP coming out after macworld, like a 13" 3-4lbs MBP or something like that.. i dunno, it's a wait and see type of thing..

My biggest complaint of macs is that as one as you buy one thing, they come out with something better 3 or 4 months later.

-3 minutes later: Rumours of revised product
-6 months later: Minor revision with none of the rumoured features

I'm assuming the reduced power consumption of the LED would translate to longer battery life.

I just ordered an m1330. Since I'm a student, I managed to get a $2600 configuration that basically amounts to a desktop replacement (once I slap in some more RAM) for less than $2000. I went with the LED display, since every review I read said it was awesome.
