Super Meat Boy Slides Onto Nintendo Switch

Check out what's included in the challenging platform's Switch edition.

It's not too often that a perfect platforming title comes along. Many come close, but many others fall just shy of the ideal balance between character control and overall level design. When the correct balance is struck, players are often left with something that can be enjoyed time and time again. Such is the case with Super Meat Boy, the challenging retro-platformer, and now it's featured among the growing Nintendo Switch library.

As revealed by developer Team Meat over on Twitter, Super Meat Boy has launched for Nintendo's hybrid console. To celebrate, the team have launched an all-new throwback-inspired teaser trailer decked with three minutes of fanciful 90s-throwback style and plenty of self-referential humor. Check it out below.

This new edition of Super Meat Boy looks to be the current updated version of the game, i.e. the same one that landed on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita back in 2015. If that's true, then this version doesn't feature the original game soundtrack, unlike prior versions of the game for PC. It does however feature a fine soundtrack put together by some of the top indie composers in the industry, including tracks by Binding of Isaac composer Ridiculon as well a track by Laura Shigihara of Plants vs Zombies fame. It also includes a new two-player mode, the likes of which can be seen above.

Also, this new Switch edition shouldn't be confused with Super Meat Boy Forever, as that game is still under development. The two games will represent fairly similar experiences, but Forever will launch with newly-adapted controls and randomly-generated levels.

What this Switch version is, or what it should be considered to be, is a fantastic little platforming title at a fair price. As far as we can tell, it won't offer much new content to players who have made their respective runs through previous versions. To those new to the game, or even to those who can't get enough, the Switch edition of Super Meat Boy might be one of those crucial games that can fill the gaps between bigger releases.
